Ensuite toilet separate or in bathroom?

Our ensuite desperately needs redoing and will be quite a good size when the oversize corner bath, huge shower/sauna unit and second sink are removed. However we are unable to agree on whether the toilet should be kept separate or knocked through. I think it would give us extra room and allow us to move the shower from behind the door if it is knocked through but my husband thinks it will be easier to keep it as it as and that it is nice to be able to use the toilet when someone is in the bathroom (we do have three other toilets!). I would be interested on other's opinions. Thank you.

Your husband is definitely right in that it would be easier to keep the WC separate. However, whether it would be better to join the two rooms is quite another issue. Most often, we join bathrooms and WCs to give a greater feeling of space and (as an incidental plus point) less wall to maintain. Assuming cost isn't the main issue, you'll probably need to convince your husband that the benefits of rearrangement merit venturing beyond his comfort with the status quo.

From what your describing we had the same thing going on,I didn't like the ensuite( too small) and the bathroom needed to be bigger,so we got rid of the ensuite and put a door between our bedroom and bathroom like a jack and Jill.After a while I felt it just didn't work so we closed up the wall and we now have one big bathroom.im glad we did it now. I too wondered if it would devalue the house and I'm sure if a larger family moved in it could be a bit of a problem,maybe someone from the real estate world will pop in and give you some advice. I think your best best is to ask an estate agent as to what people want specifically in your local area and the type of buyers your house would attract. I think nowadays people would expect at minimum a bathroom and separate toilet for a house that size. Personally I would want an ensuite, babies grow (sorry!) and a study is really only useful if you work from home a lot or cannot fit a working space for homework etc. Spending 2-3 k could add a lot more value to the house and attract a bigger selection of buyers.

I think an ensuite without a toilet is fine, since you already have two loos there. Maybe you could squeeze another toilet in somewhere downstairs, closer to the soil pipe?
