Flooring dilemmas

Am planning a complete kitchen redesign. Wall coming down, direct access to garden etc. Its a north east facing wide galley kitchen approx. 5m2 x 3.5m2. Have chosen Magnet Astral blue kitchen with white quartz counter tops but struggling with flooring. Want porcelain tiles but something that doesn't drain the light. Any ideas?

Have you considered Karndean flooring at all?
It's perfect for the kitchen as it's made of Vinyl (Not MDF or Ply-wood so it won't swell up and distort if you spill something on it!) Their Palio-clic range is easy to install, it's warm underfoot and it comes in a wide variety of finishes from wood-effect to tile-effect.

In tiled areas I like to see tiled skirting,. However I would consider the style of the Front door and staircase and the door frames. If the over all look is contemporary tiled skirting will look great. Are you having wood or tiled skirting in the living and dining area. I would have the same in the hallway as the other living areas

Thanks Sonia. I like the top image - we were thinking of dark units with light worktops, some natural oak elements and F&B amonite walls. I think getting the natural wood element will warm things up.

I actually like the patterned floor, so I'd say cement tiles or similar. Something with beige/sand in it that goes with the wood. Some blue for freshness. Orange or yellow for a bit of fun. Grey and white to go with the kitchen. Perhaps something darker to add some drama (in a good way). My semi-open kitchen has a back/white/grey/brown terrazzo floor that works really well with the pine floor next to it. I'd most certainly not continue the wood into the kitchen. And a faux wood tile may look off.

Totally agree with Kent Blaxill. White Porcelain is going to show any dirt quite horrifically and you'll be eternally cleaning them, especially as you will now have direct access to the garden. We have Karndean throughout the whole of the downstairs, it's indestructable, doesn't show any dirt, despite the dogs trying their hardest. Doesn't scratch like cheaper flooring in fact it's even flood proof as we had a problem with a conservatory roof once ( last time i let another builder near my house .......never again! )

White painted oak may look good:- Karndean I believe you can also have it sealed which gives it a shine.

Thanks all. Have gone with an Italian greyish wood effect tile which has a lovely warmth to it without being dark and will give some texture to an otherwise sleek kitchen. Your comments were all helpful and I am now tiled out!
