Layering rugs advice!

Rug is too small for playroom. When it goes from under the sofa there's too much space at the RC end, so I was wondering whether to get another smaller rug to go from under the sofa & put a coffee table on top to zone it? That's interesting, Alice, thanks. The rug we have is a silk patchwork one and it's very thin. It was bought for a different house, and has always been too small for this room. Now that the interior walls have come down, I think it could look like a postage stamp! It makes sense to put it under the coffee table as that's a defined space, so before I give up on it, I'll try it again with the rest of the furniture. I'm sure the cats will love it, even if I don't!

I think a navy rug will match very well, and I like your first example as it has a little yellow without being overpowering. I also think a colourful Persian rug would look amazing and bring warmth to the room. You can buy them second hand on eBay. New ones are pretty pricey. Here’s some ideas, they may be too colourful for you, but I thought I’d just throw these in the mix!

Love the sofa. A nice statement colour! I would work well would be some neutrals to give the sofa its moment. But a rug/ accessories that will complement the other bits of furniture in the room. with browns and golds. I would recommend a rug that has texture but plainer and lighter to open up the room a bit. But also a curtains something that is softer and bright and light as well. of a more airy and delicate nature over some blackout blinds. I would disagree personally - I would either go for a rectangle that goes under the two chairs and side table, facing the garden - to make this a little zone of it's own and to get an inward view on the room, drawing your eye into this area of the room. Or to a large circle that goes under the far corner edge of the sofa and the middle of the room, tying all the areas together. You are doing the right thing by taping them out. If you are having trouble - maybe find the rug you want first and see what sizes it comes in and plan those out to see what works. I hope it helps. All the best, Gina

Thank you! Just need to get the 2nd rug sorted (& plantation shutters in) - it's the missing bit of the jigsaw.
Any suggestions on size appreciated too

Hi. I love layered rugs but I can't quite picture it as you say. I like cowhides or sheepskins layered or randomly layered as per the pics. If randomly layered I think it works best with thin rugs, I really like the new rug, could you maybe turn the grey rug and cut it to size just to zone the seating area? If wanted you could then layer the new rug?

Hi. I think I would be tempted to go the other way. Pull the rug under sofa instead to create the sitting room area and put a featured shaped rug (runner) at the end in keeping with the play room style.

I think it depends on the size of the space you have when you pushed the other one back under the sofa.
You want it to be slightly under the other one but then not lipping up the other side (if that makes sense) :)

You also want to bear in mind (as Minnie said) the height of the rug so don't get anything with any substantial height. :)

I really like Gina's idea. I just thought as the sofa was in a corner it may work better with all sofa feet on the rug. Could you take 2 pics a) pulling the rug under the front feet in the direction the rug is in and then turn it sideways so all feet are on the rug ( and fold it under!)?! It's a lovely room, were you kelbel before?!

I'd be careful of trip hazards in a playroom with layering rugs.

Rugs are a great way to define spaces, I love your idea. My only worry with a thin rug, is that it will bunch up over the thick rug you have now. So instead of a Kilim, maybe try a Berber rug if you like the Geometric pattern. Or make sure the Kilim layers under the existing rug.
