Painting bathroom laminate furniture

I have a dated beech effect bathroom vanity unit and bath panel. They are in good condition. Can I paint them? If so, what do I paint them with? Has anyone done this?

Hi Deborah,

If you try to paint directly on laminate the paint won't adhere, you need to apply primer first. Once dry you can paint the vanity unit successfully as the primer creates a surface that the paint can adhere to. Would be keen to hear if anyone has any other tips! What colour are you thinking of painting it?

Oh, something pale, like ivory or similar then either paint on stencils or do a painted grain. I grainpainted chipboard wardrobe doors once long ago and the result was terrific. It's lasted many years too!

If you are keeping the skirting consider painting it the same colour as the floor to trick your eye into thinking the floor area is bigger.

Hi Senspasce and thank you my husband works for a large tile manufacturer and the tiles where purchased on slight seconds and a great tiler who works all over the world did the tiling beautifully. The design was copied from the company brochure so I knew it was foolproof design in its day which was over 20yrs ago so not done so bad really certainly had my moneys worth. The window is very heavily obsurced glass with leaded design so does not need blinds which cannot be fitted as casement to window is not deep enough I have had curtain treatment on expandable rod but like the light and openness. I prefer a bath we use to have shower on bracket with a shower curtain when I had new mixer and taps I did away with them to open the room up and getaway from water mold building up we use bath mat on floor when showering and not a problem with no screen a lot less cleaning too never a problem without them.

In looking at the wall board, it seems there are several shades you could pick out to use, ranging from a very dark charcoal gray to a sand. If you went dark, you could create an intimate space with some shine elements in chrome or rose gold fixtures or accessories.

Zinsser Bin is an excellent primer and undercoat all-in-one. In my opinion you should still very lightly sand, wash down and leave the surfaces to dry, although this isn't strictly necessary these days with a lot paints, i still prefer to do it the 'proper' way rather than risk flaking and peeling !

You can then paint over the top and i'd recommend a Satinwood or Gloss paint that are washable and waterproof.

There are other primer and undercoats available that are water based and any of the water based Glosses and Satinwoods will go great over them, plus they're slightly easier to work with than the oil based paints such as Zinsser.

If you go with Zinsser, i personally find, the oil based paints work with it better than water based.

We actually did our whole kitchen with acrylic spray paint over the old laminated surfaces. We scratch them with a light sandpaper and then sprayed them with car paint. ( Ford, Dove Grey )

Worked a treat and still going strong after around 5 years! You do need to leave to dry thoroughly between coats, but spraying was very satisfying and easy and has left us with a scrubbable surface!
