Hi, I've had handles and I now have handleless and I most certainly do prefer the units without handles, not only is it one less thing to clean but you can wipe down in a single motion without having to get around the handle. If you would like handles, I'd look at the slim (profile??) handles which are fitted at the top of cabinets. I think these are timeless designs. With regards to splashback, I'm not a fan of tiling, and I think it does date a kitchen but that is down to you. I'd prefer either a glass splashback, if it's a wood effect/marbled work top, using the same effect as splashback or upstand and paint. which you select depends on the finish you would like to achieve. Beware of dark colours on a dark floor. We wanted a dark colour so chose a light floor - and it works, just. If I'm honest, I think it is a bit too dark, but it does look good and my wife loves it. It is F&B Mouse's Back. It also works because the kitchen is big and well lit - dark cabinets may make a galley kitchen feel a bit like a corridor i.e. oppressive. I quite like the light wood, but if painting, I'd go bright for your layout.

I did originally plan for shaker cupboards above with push to open mechanism, but whilst working with the designer I changed my mind. There were some issues with practicality. I also want them to be wide horizontally rather than vertically, which didn’t look right when I saw the plans. The handleless units look exactly as I want, so I’m going to go for it! However, I do have push to open shaker cupboards on the wall in another area, but it’s not a cooking or eating area. Difficult to explain. They are tall, vertical, traditional looking ones. When looking at the finished plan it looks fine because the push to open shaker style cupboards can be seen not too far from some tall shaker cupboards, whereas the handleless ones aren’t near any other tall or wall units. I’m not sure I’ve explained that very well, but the plans and walkthroughs all look good.
