Has so much potential!! As a concept planner, looking at this i would ask for lots and lots more info on how many people live there - ages of any children (ie do they need supervision or not ) - garden facing N?E? S? W ? Etc How far off extension as might be better to delay kitchen improvement till this built. Any party walls - window placements etc etc It's great to get some creative ideas going at the moment ! When you are in, and can measure properly, then you can ramp it up a notch ! I'd start by booking a 'walk around' with a competent builder if I were you . Ask which walls can go - which can stay - which doors can easily be moved etc . Then armed with as much detailed info as you can get either post again for some free help, or approach a pro to work with on this !

Thanks for your advice. I haven't actually looked on the government's ppw. The floor is probably quite a bit higher inside the property, and the opening could well be lower than 1.7 (more than likely exactly 1.7m!!) My gripe is the fact that once opened it encroaches into my area, which I would like to 'develop', and an open window would prevent me from doing this. Then there's the security issue - quite a dark space, and we've already had one recent incident where thieves breaking in to neighbouring houses, crossed gardens and then used my alleyway to escape.

Personally I think that the issue is that the pebbledashed section is too plain and this is exacerbated by the fact that the roof here is higher than the original plan. In my opinion the solution is to create some visual interest in this area. If both you and your neighbour is replacing the porch a taller version might help. Personally I think the pebbledash looks like a lower quality product than the rest of the house and painting it would help lift it (as long as the neighbour also want to do it as half done would look worse). Ideally I would put a tall thin sash style window in the pebbledashed section but I recognise this might be inconvenient inside the house- but it could be faked by adding a window surround to the outside to match the stone on the bay.
