What's the next big color after grey?

Needing to choose color palette for living room and kitchen and am wondering if grey is still "in", or if perhaps another color such as beige is in style now?

Why do we keep worrying about whats in?

All fashions go in cycles and the most important rule is

What colour suits the room etc that you are decorating ?

What colour do YOU like ?

Don't be dictated to by what's supposedly in e.g. Grey

There are so many more fabulous colour combinations to be had

You decide and good luck with your decorating

I'm interested too. Think beige, white, magnolia, grey and navy have all been done in the last 20 years so what will be next?! There are only so many neutral colours...

In my opinion we will move towards the 1980s style with more patterns and colours (for what it's worth!). Having had a long spell of mid century style. But in general I just go with what I love at the time, and try not to think about it being in or out of fashion.

I think it'll be a soft 'praline' type colour set which is big next. Kelly Hoppen, interior designer uses these colours a lot.

Hello Plymouthlass, You have a good amount of seating in your Living Room, and a nice, neutral grey to work from in the sofa fabric. I’d suggest adding some warmth and interest to the room. Wallpaper would work well; alternatively some eye catching art work would look great along the main wall behind the sofa with painted walls (re-hanging the existing mirror on a side wall). I’d then add a rug under your coffee table and two side tables either side of your small sofa. These side tables would be a great place to locate a pair of table lamps. If you need additional storage in your room, trunks rather than side tables would give you storage and table space. A big difference would be to add a touch of softness and texture to your window by adding a pair of curtains with tiebacks would be ideal. Don’t forget to try and fit your curtain pole near the ceiling as this creates the illusion of a greater ceiling height.

Hi Emma, The kitchen sounds stunning. Minnie has a great suggestion with a darker surface for the floor taking into account the soft neutral tones you have chosen. A darker tone on the floor would really set off cabinets and Silestone top. I can understand your dilemma, there are so many products on the market now it's hard to choose! What colour to warm up a cool grey exterior in a country house?!

Ok, so here are a couple of photos of the colour. I have a wooden gate at the front of the house which is painted in 'Windmill Lane' (Little Greene), so don't want to go OTT on green, as I also like the fact the gate is a different colour. The front of the house is a bit dated in terms of its style, but with some big planters containing climbing roses which will grow up and around the storm porch, this should also soften the look and make it more 'country'. Also, the border which is currently dark grey, is going to be painted in Rock Salt too. So looking for a bit of colour on the window ledges only. I'd be really grateful for your advice/ideas!

The only way to future proof your home is not to follow trends. It also depends on the light aspect. The same colour in a north facing room and a south facing will look completely different. I think you can’t go wrong with different shades of green. I don’t mean bright apple green, which is lovely, but earthier sage greens or olive shades. If you search on Stories above, there has been a recent article on the popularity of green which may help. Green also marries well with other colours. Farrow & Ball have a fabulous range of soft greens as do Little Green, but one Dulux shade that is gorgeous is Overtly Olive - quite a dark green but good in a sunny room. Green is all the rage this year, as is big bold patterns especially jungle like style. I would keep these to your living space and if you're less bold, stick to them as accents as opposed to the main wall colour. Yellow is encouraged as a good colour for a kitchen as it's bright, stimulates conversation and happiness :) Happy decorating and styling :)

Barbie pink! Just kidding:) I'm going with whites as well. But not brilliant white, bit too clinical, so more off whites. Really depends on room situation and personal taste as well. Just go with what you like.

I've read bold green is to be on trend, moving away from the deep blues and greys...I think brilliant white has had its time as has greys, I'm thinking maybe warmer hues...or patterns

There is really no such thing as grey, unless you mean white + black which results in a very dreary colour. Most of the greys we use have a tinge of something, it's just a question of identifying the right one for the room and aspect. If a room looks stunning and fabulous it would be irrational to change it wouldn't it? I do think though that we are getting a bit bolder now, think tone rather than colour.

Thank you for everybody for your contributions! They have resulted in a mix - my keeping the newly painted light grey for the entranceway and landing, purchasing a white handleless kitchen with a tbd countertop and light floor tiles, and choosing beige for the living room to be heavily accented with green.

We think you can't go wrong with grey - there are just so many shades to choose from and it's such a balancing colour that can work as a background or bold statement. Going for a grey palette will give you the option to refresh the colours of your accessories whenever you like too - it's not a limiting shade and goes well with greens, pastels, pinks and blues or just monochrome.

Agreed, one can't go too far wrong with grey. And you could always jazz it up with some art! These artworks incorporate grey and may well be useful in tying together the walls with other colours in the room.
