Help! I can't decide where the house number should go. I'm leaning towards on the flint instead of the door frame. Thoughts?

And if on the flint what type of number so it's easily visible? I don't want a slate plaque...

Lovely door which is very welcoming.

My eye naturally goes to the centre of the door, to where the spy hole is, so above that makes most sense.

Hi miss. To put just right and the best solution for your entrance is very important and we can say dificould to. There is many important facts you should think about ( architecture situacion, your taste and wishes, investition, how strong is the day light etc.) You have two posibilities, chouse and make artistic stained glass before paonting the interior to chouse color of wall on stained glass or second which is more dificould and left to designer of glass less space is to make the project for already colored ambient. If its important for you is great to think input the glasses in triplex glass sistem (stained glass is in the midle of two glasses) to protect them, easy cleaning and get a good U thermo index. You can use one of two diferent technics of stained glass (leaded or "Tiffany"). Leaded glass is very old technic of producing windo glasses and traditionaly used for victorial style. The star of Art Noveu is Tiffay technic. But for the doors and ambient we more prefer artistic glasses in "Tiffany" becouse it is much more strong and delicat look from near position. Special in arabic countries is very popular rich victorian mansions with new "tiffany" stained glasses inside. Any way its my opinion and recomendation to use interior designer or master artist for design of stained glass art to make your project just perfect and you will lather nor regret where you invested the money. I can say you the price for autor unique slech will be from 50EUR. In my studio we normaly offer three diferent skeches which using all information we have (architecture situacion, your wishes and investition fond) to make your wishes come thrue. Living in a rural area, none of the homes are numbered so we had to choose a name for our place. We got together as a family and threw some suggestions about. Eventually it was between 2 and we let the children decide. It was shortly after the first 'Lord Of The Rings' film came out and so the name they plumped for was influenced by that. I'm glad they chose it now as we get so many people commenting what a great address we have, especially paired with our street name - so, we live at 'Rivendell, Devils Highway' which, luckily, is actually as picturesque as it sounds and I think pretty cool

My first instinct is at the top of the door between the glass panels. Such a lovely door deserves a nice metal number in say, chrome for a more modern feel or black wrought iron style for a more traditional look.

creating a front entrance ‘gate’ as a main door??

You will be altering the appearance of the front elevation. Planners, and planning departments, have different interpretations of the rules. It would be prudent to procure some pictures of your proposed gates ,and discuss your ideas informally with the local area planner before incurring any expense. Say you want to tidy up the front ( bins etc ) and provide better security to the dwelling ( a planning consideration ) and sound them out. It should be ok but for a bit of time it saves the potential hassle if they have a local policy and you were to buy gates that were, for instance too high for their liking without planning permission. I have had 2 instances recently were locals have not liked someone's gates and have informed the planners who insisted on a planning application. Either way it should be ok eventually. Good luck.

Maybe replicate the shape and colour of the existing wall light onto the opposite side of the door adding a chrome number 7. For added effect, light it with a small LED.

I hate the light at the door and want to do something a bit more dramatic like a lantern or something but I'm now allowed to just change it. I have to ask permission for the first 5 years!

I also like the idea of the number in the transom window but I think it's a bit too small.

I think I've settled on an acrylic plaque with a black background mounted on the right (with the street name below) and will be seeking permission to swap the light out for a black one. I'd also love to change that vent to a grey one but might look to paint it so it blends away more. I need permission to do that too

As it's a low number why not spell it out in a serifed font in caps with some letter spacing along the top of the lovely thick frame. Maybe I'm raised brushed steel

I suggest you maintain the symmetry of the classic door by placing the house number on the flint on the other side of the door from the lantern light, at the same height and distance from the frame as the light. Ideally I would place both further from the door frame, but the lantern electrics might make this difficult.

As it's a single number I would just put it in the centre of the door above the spyhole. I agree with Sven - that's where my eye naturally looks for it and it would stand out well against the white. Alternatively you could put it on the wall to left or right of the door.

I would not go with letters though. To me that seems a little 'try-hard' and will irritate anyone looking for your house. House numbers shouldn't look ugly, but all the same, they are there to enable identification of your home to visitors/ delivery people, emergency services etc. so should be functional as well as stylish.

If this was mine I would put a number on the middle pane of the glass over the door.You can get them printed onto glass film.

DO you want it really visible or go stealth mode? The eye naturally goes for the spy hole (I concur) so there or above on the lintel is a classical place. If you want a show stopper number stuck on the flint, there are a couple of companies that do laser and water jet cut patterns so that it looks like pietra dura (Italian mosaics normally for table tops in semiprecious stones. Be prepared to pay about £300, but the wow effect is so worth it.

YOu could talk to them and get a price and with a photo they will advise you on stones and colours. For the other two options go for normal B&Q brass

Due to the confusing layout of the estate I want it to be clearly visible. My house is on a corner in the middle of a 'row' of houses that are actually on 2 different streets! I pity the delivery people (and me probably!) as it's also not well signed. For example, the houses next to me are number 2 on one side and 5 on the other. The street names are also awful so I went with what would be addressed on post and packages to help. The window above the door was considered but ultimately I think it's too small to be obvious so I've gone for an acrylic plaque with a black background and white text and will seek permission to change the light fixture to a black one.

I had a similar dilema - I opted for a free standing large stone, and glued numbers to it and placed at side of door. It looks attractive and is different too!
