Could our fireplace be original?
Comments (3)It's not easy to say for sure from the photo. It certainly COULD be an original, since the style is consistent with what might be found in an Edwardian home. Is the profile of the trim at the bottom of the mantel an exact match to the baseboard trim on the wall? That could be a clue (but not definitive). Cosmetically, the wood of the mantel looks to be in excellent shape - is that consistent with rest of the house? I know that may be difficult to discern if the rest of the wood in the home is painted, but after 100 years or more you'd expect to see a few scratches and dings, sparing an expert refinishing. Also, the style is fairly straightforward and not overly-embellished; if the rest of the woodwork in the house seems to be consistent with this - then it very well could be an original. All in all, it's a nice, solid little mantel with nice proportions. Even if you do decide to replace it, have it carefully removed, either for reclamation - or to adapt it for use in another room. The scale might be perfect for a dining room or bedroom that could use a special focus....See MoreFireplace dilemma
Comments (40)Hi Cherie. Yes I love it. I sent the houzz tour it featured on to my husband and he said it would be our dream home! Thanks for the info and the fire details, I didn't even think of a stud chimney! I'm not sure it would work for ours, the room is 17 x 18 but the chimney breast is 51cm already so it's pretty deep. (Once I work out how to remove a couple of test bricks I may be pleasantly surprised and find the fire there as the hearth is still under the carpet!). what are your thoughts on it working in the room? IF the paper stayed the plaster would be greys and antique gold...See Morecolour dilemma-paint fireplace or wall??
Comments (17)Such an interesting room full of gorgeous pictures and books. I love books! Now colours that I think would look lovely with your blue curtains are the soft pastels - green, pink and pale yellow, but you want a deep cosy colour so let’s move on! I’m a little bit obsessed with dirty pinks at the moment, a world away from Barbie pink so don’t panic. Colours like F&B Setting Plaster or Little Greene’s Dorchester Pink, or Blush which is much darker and cosier. I also like deep stone colours such as LG Roman Plaster, or if you wanot to go even darker, Silt looks nice, very organic tones. I’ll try and find some pics. I’ve no idea how to photoshop, but I’m sure someone will!...See MoreOriginal Victorian Fireplace?
Comments (6)Yes, I have this niggleing feeling theres somthing dodgy about it, but the carving is finer then I'd expect for a modern one. Though those bits sticking out at the sides look odd. never seen a fireplace with those and bits of moulding just stuck here and there....See MoreCP
