mirror back to alcove with glass shelves

I'm looking for ideas to create this alcove into a place to store glassware.

would like to have a mirror back, with glass shelves and LED strip lighting to show up the glassware.

The issue I have is that the walls are not plumb or straight, so getting a glass mirror custom made is fine, but will leave large gaps around the edges.

The other option is to use mirror tiles.

I am trying to think of the best way to do this, and how to fix the glass shelves through the mirror.

Would appreciate any ideas / tips

You could use Mirrored Acrylic sheet for the back. It's far more easily cut and will look effective. You can put the acrylic up and still drill through it to put up the shelves, which you can't do with mirror so easily.

Bear in mind though, that if you want strip lights, they don't stick particularly well in my experience, plus, if using glass, you will see them. You may be better off with Mirrored acrylic for the back and wooden shelving or black shelving to tie in with the kitchen. You can add a lip to the wood with quadrant on the front of the shelf, this then allows the strip lighting to sit on the wood and it will stay where you put it, plus the little quadrant lip with direct the light slightly backwards on to the mirror. However, you will still see the reflection of the back of the wood and the strip lighting in the mirror.

I think i'd be tempted to go with the mirrored acrylic with your glass shelves and no strip lighting. You have a spot light very nearby, so the acrylic will pick up on that.

You have no socket / power source nearby for the transformer, so you'd have to come off one of the spotlights, mount it in the ceiling and then come down to the shelves. Seems a shame when you'e just finished all the plastering.

I would create a complete unit that can be built in, two side pieces can be grooved out to take the glass shelves to use as support, groove the backs of these also for the mirror to slide down into and use a piece across the top to hold everything together.
On the front add in scribed returns to the wall and use this to fit the led strips to on the inside. As said above you will see the reflection of the led through the mirror though, I’m thinking a spot light in the top will be better because it will shine through the glass shelves to illuminate the whole area and being behind the sink all electrics will be well away. Making a built in option will also get over the uneven walls you mentioned.

I currently have about 5 large boxes of books in my house and 5 “unused” alcoves so alcove shelving seems an obvious solution to me! What I’m struggling to decide is 1) How far recessed from the alcove the shelves would look best (2cm or more in an alcove that is 30cm deep?), 2) how chunky/thick (top to bottom) the shelves should be and 3) whether to pack the shelves in eg for novels without leaving much space between shelves or make a taller space on the bottom shelf for photos etc? Any ideas please?

I'm just nearing the end of a major house refurb and had quite a few trickeee little alcove'y numbers to contend with In one of the bedrooms I decided to split the room and make use of both of the little critters! To the left hand side of the chimneybreast, I removed an ugly cupboard which had a 'feature'!! air vent!! (courtesy of the previous owners putting a fist/foot through the door) and installed secret cupboards hidden behind faux panelling. It works very well if you need extra storage for bits and pieces that you don't need access to 24/7 and if, like me, you get broken into and some little oik steals all your tools, it is handy for concealing any valuables To the right hand side where the louvre doors are, I put up a stud partition wall and shoe horned in a shower room which is a little over a metre wide and 3m long and now have two rooms from one ... Reeeeeesult!

Thanks F! Credit where it’s due to everyone who made suggestions (including you!) though. It’s inchyra blue. I wasn’t sure about the room for ages but I’m really happy with it now. Just need to replace the chandelier at some stage :)
