Need help with my apartment!

This is an apartment that I am currently buying (fingers crossed it all goes through okay!) so none of the furniture will be there and I need some ideas for decorating it. I love the eclectic look and the focal point of the fire (although I dont know how to exentuate it) - any ideas would be great!

Is the fireplace included in the apartment? If that's so it will be much easier for you to play with any design you like. Since you like eclectic, here are some ideas I got online. Hope it helps you decide.

Thankfully the fireplace is included - I love the large mirror in the 3rd picture, one great thing about the apartment is the amount of wall space for pictures/mirrors etc

Posted this on another version of this thread but this one seems to be getting going better! Is there scope to add some curtains at the windows? Even if she doesn't pull them across they will make the room look and feel better. If she can hang anything on the wall, a mirror would help. Or get a floor standing mirror to lean against the wall to reflect light and give the feeling of space. Might be too heavy and expensive though. An adjustable desk lamp can be pointed up, on to the wall to cast more light into the room. A bowl of fruit on the table will look good and maybe some books neatly stacked. In fact I've just realised that's what's missing - books! A stack of books, or some lined up along the skirting boards, or a cheap bookcase. Flowers always help a room, but cut flowers will add to the budget, so maybe some dried grasses in an elegant vase? I hope your daughter settles in OK and finds her apartment becomes homely and welcoming. Angie

Hello Fiona, It looks like you have a place which could be nice with a little care. In answer to your questions: As many coats as it takes. Paint a coat, look at it when it's dry, if you can still see the paint underneath it needs another coat. Usually 2-3 coats are needed but more for covering really bright colours like that small patch of purple in the living room. I can't suggest a specific brand for another country. A folding screen / room divider would definitely work without causing problems. They are not difficult to make or you can buy one. You absolutely should not surround it on all sides without checking what it is and how much airflow it needs. Probably treated wood for outside furniture. Plastic is cheaper but doesn't look that good and can risk being blown off the terrace in high winds. Metal is more expensive and more likely to get stolen if there's a chance of that. Maybe look out for second hand stuff? Floor lamps would be the obvious choice for light. You can get cheap ones from somewhere like IKEA or again maybe second hand. This is the biggest problem you've listed. Here in the UK the laws for renting say bathrooms and kitchens need extractor fans. Perhaps check if there's a similar law there? If there isn't, you can ask the landlord if you can fit one and if you're lucky bargain for them to pay part of the cost. They are not that expensive. You probably won't convince them to help you. Those look like the remains of roots from ivy or something similar, and might be hard to get off. You could probably rent a pressure washer and do that wall and the terrace at the same time. A couple of notes on paint: - You don't need washable paint for every wall. The hall will need it, and the kitchen and bathroom (or special kitchen/bathroom paints, definitely try to get that for the bathroom) - Yes white is the cheapest colour to buy though Magnolia (yuck!) is as cheap here. White is also the worst colour to paint with as you get 'snow blind' and can't tell what you've already painted. White can also look quite cold. One thing you can do is have a painting/decorating party with your friends. You supply plenty of food and drink and they spend a few hours painting. You can get a lot done in a short time this way and it's quite fun to do. It's a lot less daunting than trying to do it all yourself.

You should also look at some space saving furniture, There are so many brilliant ideas out there - ottomans that contain extra seating, wall mounted stools which would work with the drop leaf table idea previously mentioned (otherwise you have to find space for them when the table is not there). Also coffee tables that transform (lift up) into dining tables so you could actually do away with the one in the kitchen and perhaps have a slimline coffee bar there instead. I guess it depends again on how often you will use the formal dining table

Love the room, it has so much potential, really great. And absolutely love the rug. I'd decorate and 'build' around the rug, it's beautiful.

Its an almost completely blank canvas for me - I have some antique walnut bedside tables and chest of drawers but everything else I will need to buy. Above this living room is a mezzanine level bedroom which I am toying with the idea of turning into a snug and using this living room as the bedroom to fully benefit from the height and light - maybe using a good quality sofa bed, blanket box (to hide bedding), my bedside tables as lamp stamps and a chest of drawers in the corner - thoughts? or anyone have experience of living upside down as it were?
