Choosing paint colour for big refurb

Hi all
We are refurbing two floors of our Victorian semi and we will very soon have to pick paint colour for a hallway and 4 bedrooms ( including a master bedroom) and a bathroom.
We have spent a lot of time planning structural work and layout so we haven't spent much time planning colour schemes for each room. Our builders work so quickly that I know they will want paint colour soon. For ease I was just going to choose F&B All White which we have used in our kitchen but worried it will look a bit stark.
Does anyone have some good neutral colours combinations that are a bit more interesting than All White that still give me options when finally pulling together a room?

I'd suggest having a look at the Greyscales by Little Greene (I think that's what they're called) - these are a series of greys/neutrals that each come in 3 or 4 levels of darkness from very pale to very deep. If you pick one or two you like then you can use the lighter one in rooms that need a pale colour and the darker version where you want more colour and it will all tie in. For example we have Little Greene French Grey Pale in our bedroom and the Mid version in our living room.

Paint & Paper Library also do a similar range (neutrals in several depth levels). They are also made by LG I believe.

Alternatively, Farrow & Ball offer a free colour advice service, though LG paint is better.

However note crackle glaze isn't usually recommended in a wet area such as a bathroom. Although they suggest using a protector... I'd probably want to be absolutely sure they were fit for purpose! Not grey white, that's also cold. Brilliant white is a white with extra blue added, so that is cold to very cold depending how much blue was added. You want a white which is slightly tinted yellow instead. I suggest you try a tester of Dulux 'Timeless' which is available in a kitchen paint and also B&Q's 'Antique White' which is a premium paint which can be washed if stuff splashes on it. The Dulux kitchen paint can be washed too, and probably has better stain and grease resistance. How important the stain resistant aspect is depends on how you use your kitchen and how close to the cooker and sink you're painting, but I would always go for a washable paint in a kitchen. A specialist kitchen paint is better. You'll just have to see if the whites will go together - that's what testers are for. Also, all the grey in a North-facing kitchen will be making it look darker and colder. You might consider choosing another colour for your painted wall in the dining area. I know grey is 'in' right now but that doesn't mean it works well everywhere and anywhere.

I am afraid I think you both need guidance. Both colour and border will date your kitchen, the expensive items you should keep very subtle as they are expensive to change when you get bored of the look. If your units are cream, try the metro tiles with a soft colour, either grey or sage green (not dark), you need to check the colours against your worktop as they have to look right together. I would suggest you do something exciting with colour on the walls. Having no picture of your kitchen makes giving advice tricky, but putting colour on the walls is cheap and by doing it this way, in a couple of years if you are bored with it you can pick a completely different colour and change the whole look. Again, with the floor, keep it fairly neutral, as it is an expensive item, if it's a small room keep it light as this will make it feel bigger, if a big room you could be more daring with a darker colour.

I would choose something very close to that deep red/rust/plum (can't quite work out what it is) in the granite. It looks as if that colour is also in the tea towel on the right (hanging on the handle in front of the oven). Everything else is so light I think the room would take it well and it would give it wow factor. You need a warm colour, as someone else has said, to tone with the cream of the cabinets and the granite.

I agree with the recommendation for LIttle Greene and Paint and Paper Library ( I think they may be owned by the same company). I have used different colours in most of my rooms as my house has very different light levels. It all depends on what you like and how much into the 'greys' you are.

Thanks all! I have gone for Little Greene in Mid Azure Green, French Grey and Washed Linen. Gorgeous colours. I also bought their book called The Little Book of Colour which helped enormously in selecting complimentary colours and made me feel comfortable going with a bold colour choice of green! Thanks for all your advice.
