The worst? Missed the last train from Dublin to Belfast and booked in at the 'hotel' across the road to be sure of getting the first train in the morning. Spent the night wide awake hoping the lock would hold, and my second line of defence - a chair wedged under the door handle - would kick in if the lock gave, while a steady procession of drunks knocked the door and rattled the handle whilst promising me a night of bliss.

The wall cupboard is definitely an oddity but once you've redecorated it might not look quite as odd. It looks as if you might have a wonderful view of water from the windows! It would be lovely to have some standard height chairs to enable you to enjoy the view. Generous sofas either side of the fireplace and a couple of characterful chairs to create some symmetry? You could use large rugs to define the different seating areas. Hope you can find something to put on the left hand side of the fireplace to balance the cupboard. Have fun and enjoy all that light.

What if you put the seating area/tv where the kitchen is in your current plan i.e. create a snug. Put the the kitchen along the opposite wall with an island in the middle-ish of the room i.e. where Jonathon has suggested TV/books in his plan. The table and chairs on the other side of island i.e where Jonathon has suggested in his plan. Could that work with your space/measurements?
