New build kitchen advice

I have just bought a new build house and was too late to choose my kitchen cabinet and worktop so they have been chosen by the developer.

The cabinets are ivory gloss and the worktop a dark/black composite. Flooring is Amtico in a mid-grey

I’m wondering what colour to do my walls. Seems like a real mish-mash of finishes that will be hard to mix together properly.

Any advice would be really welcome. Sorry, no photos available as haven’t actually moved in yet.

I think I’d go down the Magnolia/ cream route.

Ivory gloss and a grey floor can be matched with a warmer grey on the walls. It's impossible to give a colour as you'll need to get colour cards and lay them on the flooring.

If you're up for a splash of colour then there are all sorts that will go with the ivory and grey. Greens will work, raspberry, mustard, a slate blue, mulberry and the new kid on the block 'blush'...........If you have a peninsula or island you could put black leather bar stools in for something to pick up on the work top, or maybe try and introduce some natural wood to soften the look down a bit.

Hi. Assuming you're not putting an extractor in you could add shelves between the wall units and accessorise. As you've already got a feature wall and the boiler is white I would probably leave the walls as they are. I would remove anything from the boiler as its drawing attention to it. I'm sure the safety sticker thing can go on the side?? I'd add art over the dining table, something with some colour and flowers on the table, fresh or good faux. A potted herb/s for the worktop and then a couple of accessories either with colour or texture, fruit bowl, pestle and mortar. Glass jars with cork lids filled with pasta etc can also look good and homely and I'd remove anything bar the kettle and toaster from the side. A marble and wood chopping board could also look nice but just add a few practical things that also look nice!

Hi There. Congratulations to your daughter! I think its definitely worth investigating the costs of covering the kitchen / diner area with spot lights as covering the entire area with 2 ceiling pendants may not provide adequate lighting when there is no sunlight coming from the living room windows. The lounge area can easily be covered using lamps but it is important to have sufficient lighting in the kitchen area. If spot lights are not an option, you can also consider LED lighting for under cabinet lighting for the wall units as well as the base units. I would look at a standard laurel. Something like this will cost around £120 each for a decent size. You should plant these every 120cm-150cm. Don't forget that you can add height by building a raised border around the perimeter. You could also look at Photinia Red Robin. But get them professionally pruned each year as photinias will get very straggly if you just trim the outside branches as you need to take out some of the centre wood to promote thicker growth.

I'd keep the sofa where Jonathan has got it. Have the tv wall mounted by the sockets on a swing arm bracket with a low,slim sideboard underneath (for storage). Some of the mid century modern ones are low so may be worth a look. Opposite the sofa I'd have a console with upholstered stools/cubes underneath and a chair next to it angled towards the sofa. Hang the largest mirror you can over the console to make the room feel wider. I'd also go for a built in banquette seat with storage underneath for toys etc. I don't think you can fit a 5ft table, certainly not with a high chair unless you have one that clips on so would go for a 4ft one (we often have 6 for breakfast around ours, cosy but fine!). A pedestal table would be good hence the tulip one as Jen also pictured! I'd go for 3 dining chairs. Keep one by the console with a throw, cushion etc and push the table up to include it at the end for guests when needed. Use a rug to zone the living space so the front legs of the sofa and chair sit on it. You should also have room for a small side table next to the sofa (I make the room a bit longer than Jonathan unless I've misunderstood the dimensions?) Try cutting out paper templates of everything to size and walking round the room before you buy to get a feel of how the space will work

@Man about the house, thank you as well. That’s a pretty comprehensive range of options available and a lot of food for thought. I’m sure we can find the solution from all of these combinations.

I would wait until you're in. The aspect of a room can totally change how we perceive the colours, so it's best to wait until you can test things out in situ. However, with ivory it's best to avoid greys that are too taupey with a violet tinge as they will clash with the ivory. Brown/greys will work best so may be worth getting some cards form Little Greene or Paint and Paper library to have a look at their ranges.
