Renovating Design Dilemma Kitchens

High gloss cabinet molding

We will be installing a kitchen with Ikea cabinets and their white high gloss doors. There will be a 6” space above the 30” cabinets. Should we leave it with the space or try to install some kind of molding to bring it all the way to the ceiling?

Ikea offer non standard sizes in comparison to other suppliers who also offer 900mm high which would have been more suitable if you want to up to the ceiling to cover that gap you refer to.

I think 6” is too big a gap to fill So it would look better to leave the wall units free floating, or as Daisy has mentioned above switch to a supplier who can provide taller units.

I have a south facing kitchen with high gloss cream units and a black worktop. The only thing I would say is when the sun hits the room you see every spec of dust or finger mark on the cabinets...not great with my dog and 2 year old! But I'm having cream gloss blinds fitted this week which hopefully will keep the dust down. I also think the cabinets somehow 'attract' dust...must be a static thing maybe?

Diana, have you considered herringbone pattern with wood effect tiles? They’re matt, but have a light texture and would make an interesting design statement and make the space feel a bit more cozy..And because they are ceramic tiles, they are easy to clean and would last forever. You can also install floor heating mats underneath.

You have all been very helpful, I think on balance I am leaning toward Matt, I have looked back at my insipration photos and the majority are matt, coupled with potential issues with keeping gloss clean and marks ..... and the genius idea from daisy England of those magic sponges to tackle Matt marks, I think I have myself a decision! Cashmere changes colour throughout the day depending on the light so i would keep all units the same colour. Personally not a lover of American fridge freezers especially in smaller kitchens. They seem to draw your eye to them as they are so bulky. Depending on the brand you will need to allow ventilation around it and also space each side if you intend to have tall units.
