How can I bring this kitchen to life?
Comments (28)Hi Daniel What a lovely light kitchen! I see you have decided to change the worktop which is a good idea if you don't like the existing (temporary fixes always seem to stay forever in my house, much better to go for a permanent solution if it's within budget!) if you like colours I think the suggested mustard yellow would be good, or teal works really well with white and wood. Also, you mentioned tiled wallpaper, how about some real tiles? I have a new kitchen too, it has very pale grey gloss units and a white quartz worktop and white walls (at the moment, eventually I'm planning to paint them dark grey). It's lovely but a little plain like yours. I found some lovely tiles which are white and grey which sounds very dull. It they introduce pattern which really ties it all together. I think you could choose some tiles with a nice pattern (they don't have to be brightly coloured if that's not your thing). You'd only need 2 rows, not all the way up to the upper units, introducing some pattern could really bring it to life. And perhaps some coloured chairs when you get round to thinking about furniture? Also, how about hanging a picture on the wall below the wall unit above the washing machine? I love a picture in a kitchen! Hope this helps, enjoy decorating your new home!...See MoreExtend terrace house and redesign ground floor
Comments (8)Thanks for the comments so far. I'm kind of thinking there's a hybrid option that isn't 1 or 2 and will probably cost a fortune, but until I find that solution, option 2 is definitely what I'm pulled towards. Oneplan, to answer your questions specifically: - The house is built on two floors - just three double bedrooms uptstairs. I'll be putting a small bathroom in upstairs as part of the project. - The "lobby" area is a vast overstatement on behalf of the estate agents when they were making the plan. "Pantry" would be a more appropriate word. Our builder mate suggested making the Pantry into a small shower and WC and converting the current downstairs bathroom into a utility room. - My kids are 4 and 5. - I haven't actually measured the porch up yet, although see comment below. - Regarding the question about the extension size. I borrowed the dimensions from a plan already submitted to the council for an exact same sized house (plans submitted before the govt relaxed planning rules). This size works because the garden is not so big. If I make the extension any bigger the garden will be really too small (and I want at least some space for the kids to run around in). Actually, I saw this post earler today https://www.houzz.co.uk/discussions/how-can-i-bring-this-kitchen-to-life-dsvw-vd~1171087 and I love it. Wonder if I could work with something along these lines....See MoreHelp & Inspiration for Grand Ground Floor Design. Thanks!
Comments (12)Mulled this over, overnight! Decided, way too much building work and knocking about to justify the cost, plus you lose the garage, which will most probably devalue as per Jonathan's comment above. Makes house less saleable, as main lounge now not seperate from rest of downstairs, therefore less appealing to some. Plus, having a room labelled Study / Play area / Entertaining............cannot see how you could possibly furnish such a room, too many dual purposes. My plan below, keeps it far more simple. Leave the garage, leave the Utility and Pantry, but change their uses. One becomes downstairs shower room, the other changes from pantry to Utility. Build across the end of the Hallway and make the area under the stairs a coat room. ( handy storage), this then seperates the back of the house from the front of the house. Now take out the downstairs loo and remove both walls, this opens up the Kitchen / Diner into one big space. Add a door from the kitchen to the playroom, which you can leave open to keep an eye on the kids. You have made massive improvements with far less building works, and, should you want to at some stage make the space even bigger at the back, which isn't necessary, you could add a ground floor rear extension. ( last plan shows this ) The above layout will appeal to far more people, should you wish to sell in the future....See MoreLife and Light Added to a Family Home in Wimbledon
