Renovated kitchen, what floor should we have?
Comments (13)I agree vinyl flooring would be better. The variation in designs, textures and colours now is vast, some you cannot tell from the real thing, but unlike the real thing is warmer and easier to take care off. I had some fitted recently that was grass effect my customer loved it and the cost was very reasonable. Look out on the web for some unusual vinyl designs, to add a unique /designer feel to your room. High street carpet shops only seem to stock standard (boring) designs that are 'popular' , be adventurous ' it's only flooring' You will be amazed at the choice available on line...See MoreRenovation Renovating a kitchen with difficult layout
Comments (8)Hi Ingrid, I really like the way it looks. Not sure if it's the wood panelling in the kitchen or the cosiness of living room. However, I'm guessing the house is old, and given all the blankets in the living room, you mum sitting in doors with a jumper on, the log burner, and electric radiator I'm going to assume it gets very cold in there! So I would reconsider going open plan. I think, unless you have a healthy budget for thermal upgrades, the log burner will struggle to heat the bigger space and electric heating will work out expensive. I would instead just replace the pocket doors with bigger ones so that your mum can have them open in warmer weather and close off the living room in colder weather. I would flip the kitchen door so that it opens into the entrance or replace it with a pocket door. Then I would swap the dining area over with the sink area, by raising the window ledge slightly, giving you mum a much more efficient L shaped kitchen. The fridge I would bring round to the pocket wall door and I would put the sink under which ever of the two windows has the better views. I think this layout would allow your mum to have a nice open plan kitchen/diner/living area in warmer weather and keep the cosy living room in colder weather. It would be achievable quite easily on a modest budget....See MoreInternal layout changes to enlarge kitchen and 2 bathrooms upstairs
Comments (11)Opening up some will surely help. Like Jonathan said, there are many many options. I changed the hallway, some coat space, double glass door to let in more light, loo. Then kitchen with pantry, as there are plenty full bathrooms. Backdoor for muddy/wet shoes on the side. Since it is such a large space, how about a massive sofa in the lounge? And window seat, if height allows. Keep the downstairs bedroom and bathroom, as it can be a playroom, a guestroom (b&b?) or even future master bed. I did open up the dressing area, to make it brighter. Washing machine could go anywhere, I drew them there, but it would be quite the walk with hampers, so might it be an idea to place it upstairs (eaves storage perhaps?). Upstairs I opened up the study, as the master bedroom ate the window. I tried keeping most loadbearing walls (or which seemed to be) though the chimney on the left had to go anyway. Kept the landing storage, for linen, towels, seasonal clothing, christmas decoration, there are always things that need a place. Certainly move the heater though (if it's still there). Also think about heating, insulation, efficiency. Things that will make it more comfortable and pay themselves back in the long run. Planning is key. Hope it will help with creating your future layout and dreamhouse pleasures....See MoreHow do I reconfigure the layout/change stairs to maximise space?
Comments (7)Hi Stuart. Interesting dilemma. My first thought is. Could you extend downstairs and reconfigure the kitchen so you have a shower room downstairs. I think it couldn’t directly connect with the kitchen, you’d have to make the area bigger and have a small corridor/ storage area. The outside WC is quirky but unusable in reality. ( I’m not a designer!!)...See MoreDesign Girl
