I'd personally go for the modern home with a partial view of the woods! Floor to ceiling windows and geometric architecture. Of course, in this dream world, the house would be located where it could receive daily unobstructed sunlight and the it would be build with green technology. :)

Hello Ratty, There are so many options available these days, choosing the right thing can be quite daunting. I'm sure you won't be surprised to read that I would suggest tiles, as a very practical choice. They are so easy to keep clean and work really well with underfloor heating. As Minnie suggests, Bert & May have some beautiful tiles but as with most encaustic tiles, they are quite thick, so you would need to check the level of your existing wooden floor to make sure it is compatible. if you like the idea of hexagon tiles, you could have a look at our Fizenze range. The colours are lovely and mellow and could blend in very well with your sanded boards. Karen

Help with ground floor layout please...... playroom, snug or study?

We did love some of the suggestions above… but stuck with our original plan! Although we did change the kitchen layout from U-shaped to ”farmhouse” style, with the table in the middle and sink under the window overlooking the garden. The old dining room has become an office with two desks - partly due to COVID and the need to work from home and homeschool etc! We have also moved a lot of the children’s toy storage in here although they still bring things into the main lounge to play where there’s more room. At 8 and 5, they also actually now keep and play with a lot of toys in their rooms, so I think the old dining room will remain as more of a computer and homework room - it’s nice being able to shut the door! The ”study” on the plan is very much a workshop/gym/play room for my husband! We didnt want to sacrifice that space. It might turn into a teenage den later on perhaps, or even a downstairs bedroom for my Nan. The small upstairs bedroom has become a second office as I’m also still working from home (and my husband has too many meetings downstairs!). It houses our sofa bed too so acts as a spare room and my space to do yoga and sewing. Overall, we are pleased with how everything turned out. We quite like the option to have space away from each other and the flexibility to change the use of the different rooms. We do all spend a lot time together in either the kitchen or main lounge as plenty of space in both.

Ikea Kitchens are excellent, the attention to quality is superb. Lots of suppliers only offer doors in particular sizes, which is why when you go to an appointment at Wickes for example and you then take it to Howdens, they often have to swap the cabinets around as they don't all do all the sizes. Factoring in that you may want to change the doors in a few years at this point is in my opinion daft. You buy a kitchen and it should last 10-15 years. Magnet and Howdens offer great kitchens too. However, I have personal experience of fitting an Ikea Kitchen last year and was very impressed. I've used Howdens several times too. There are many companies however, that offer custom sizes when ordering replacements such as Kitchen door workshop and Kitchen Door Outlet to name but two. Saying that you can't replace the doors, just simply isn't accurate.
