Current floor is oak, 2 pics of tiles I’m considering.

Ok - so we all have different appreciations for different things... personally I love a patterned floor tile and I also love the mellow calm of wood as well ... do you want a calm warm space that relaxes you or a jazzy interesting space that rev’s you up for the day ahead ? As these changes change the mood of the place, as well as the look.

Yes, you can lay a wood floor over tile if the existing floor is in good shape and without cracks. I would suggest 3/8” thick, prefinished engineered hardwood flooring or easy to install laminate flooring.

That photo does look good, the two don't clash at all. I can't afford real wood flooring. I will either be having new laminate or engineered wood flooring, neither of which are something I would want in a kitchen. I also don't feel comfortable having something I feel would be more difficult to clean than tiles. It's a kitchen diner which opens onto our unusually wet and muddy garden. I have two children who create lots of mess. Just yesterday my eldest spilled some sort of hideous red goo all over the cream carpet upstairs! My other option is some sort of blue geometric patterned tiled floor. I haven't been able to find many affordable options so would probably only be able to do half of the room, depending on the way it is designed. Do any more affordable options exist? I found the optiks tiles at topps tiles which are just under £70 a square metre, so still too expensive for me. They are also quite a light blue and I'd prefer something darker. Are there any other options around?

I tested white porcelain with bright pink hair dye when I bought them for my kitchen and the dye just wiped off. In 7 years the white tiles have never stained. I've dropped a Le Crueset cast iron pan lid and the lid got damaged but not a mark on the tile. I've had some small chips at the edges when furniture has been moved over them but it is minimal damage and the furniture should have been lifted rather than scrapped across the floor. You can buy full bodied porcelain which where the colour of the tile is right throughout the whole tile and if you get chips, you should not see a variation in colour. I love porcelain and would not use ceramic after having it. The best place to go for it, is your local independent tile retailer, rather than the big stores like Topps and Tile Giant. Not all tilers are keen on fixing them it because they are harder to cut and drill than ceramics and they need diamond blades and bits which cost more. They are well worth the investment though.

Hi Simone, We can't help but love parquet in a hallway and feel it would work well with the traditional look of your carpet and stairs. What colours are your surrounding wood floors? You're right that parquet wood floors have a mix of tones which could help the hallway to blend more seamlessly with the others. All your suggestions sound great, so no help there! I do have porcelain tiles in my kitchen and they are really tough. I think “porcelain” makes people think of delicate tea sets, but it’s baked very hard and not at all delicate. I’ve had mine for 10 years and it’s so easy to look after - hoover and a quick mop. I’m very clumsy and always dropping things which smash into a million pieces when they land on the floor, but floor has always stayed intact. I’ve heard good things about LVT and I have laminate in my living room. It was a quick fix flooring but has fared really well so it’s staying!

I love patterned floors but is the current wooden one in poor condition? Or you just fancy a change?

Flooring was damaged from leaking radiator, can be fixed as still have a few boards left, but fancy a change.

Flooring has been down for over 10 years and no issues, it’s engineered oak.

Lovely kitchen. And I really like the star patterned tiles. They are a bit 'spicier' than the other pattern, which is also lovely. Think the contrast in the star patten looks great with your fridge too.

Nothing wrong with fancying a change. I really like the first pattern (2nd picture). If you want something warmer than tiles underfoot, you could try vinyl or LVT which also comes in patterned tile forms.
