Enclosed Porch Design - all ideas welcome...

Hi all...first time query and hope someone can offer inspiration!

I'd like to add a small porch on to my main entrance( which is at the back of my 170msq house and is north-facing) and I've attached a photo of it as it is now. The house is an ICF building with a standard, off-white render finish. Facing the door, 9m behind the house is a newly constructed timber finish garden office, using the same dark-green window frames. I plan to enclose the yard with timber-fencing to form a vaguely courtyard-feel...

My question: I think a 3x2m (ish) size enclosed flat-roof porch with some render, some timber, and dark-green window frames could work well .....but I'd like someone with a designer/architect's eye to give me a steer in the right direction.

Read up all about how to grow plants from cuttings. Then tell your family , friends and neighbours that you need cuttings and old pots. Buy seed raising mix and locate a stick. Also collect old margarine , yogurt etc containers. Cut off soft drink bottles make great covers. Join a local garden club and say you're a beginner. Gardeners love sharing advice and cuttings. For a cheap source of readymade plants try fetes, garage sales etc. if going to markets, go to the stalls farthest away from the gates. Enjoy!

Hi John, We would always suggest external insulation rather than internal insulation, where you have the option, because as John Botham states there is a real risk of interstitial condensation, and potential mould and damage to the structure. If you do need to do it internally be careful not to add to much and ensure it is fitted carefully without gaps and with a good vapour barrier - especially around electric sockets etc. if you use a product such as Kingspan. It is also vital that you return the insulation in around the windows, this makes significant differences to overall performance and the risk of condensation and mould at this point, though this insulation can be thinner. We often recommend a breathable insulation such as Pavadentro when internal insulation is required, as this allows the moisture to come in and out of the wall. Careful detailing at internal wall junctions, floors and roof are also needed, along with good airtightness sealing, while you are doing it. Putting a price on external insulation is difficult as it depends on many factors, such as needing to move down pipes, extending eaves etc, along with thickness and type of insulation. A good render, installed correctly should last many years without the need for any maintenance and can perform to a much higher standard than internal. I think you have a few options. You could remove more of the dividing wall to help you treat the space as one big room. While at it I might put in doors to the garden and either put matching fire surrounds in both spaces or leave the front one and take out the back chimney breast. Alternately you make your existing dining room a space for your big TV. I prefer this option as I think your TV is too big for the alcove it is in and fights for attention against a fireplace that is also larger than the original. I would likely make the space you are asking about as a lounge/ dining room and use it for entertaining/ reading and put a smaller second TV in there- probably in the RH alcove. I would put your main TV in what is currently your dining room and block up the door to the kitchen which I think will make refitting the kitchen easier at a later date. Great name btw.
