width of kitchen

Hi, we are planning a similar layout for our new kitchen. Our width is only 10.8ft. Would a narrow island fit, similar to this? The other option would be to put a coffee bar on the opposite, inside wall, also similar to the pics here. Can you please tell the width of this kitchen and your thoughts?

This kitchen is 13'-6" in width. You can not accomplish a center island with the width you describe Hal.

I think you can:- Some pictures would really help too. I've a mind to say demolish the conservatory as it doesn't provide you with any beneficial living space, plus, i'm guessing it doesn't have a glass roof and therefore, zaps the light from the potential kitchen diner. Thus, I got rid of it and slightly amended the room dimensions. The lounge area gets 4m square ( more or less ). It's currently 4.23 wide, and I made it 4m long. The French doors open in to the lounge as you have on your plan. As I had pinched 85cm from your lounge layout, I added it to the kitchen diner. A table and Chairs will not fit in to a gap of only 1.5m wide whatever you do. Therefore, I made that area 2.17m - which is still tight but do'able . Our dining table and chairs seats 8. 3 on each side with one at either end. Even when you pull the chairs out to sit down it fits in a gap of 1.85m. ( I didn't touch your load bearing wall ) This leaves the kitchen area as 2.57m ( the same as it is now ) - If you run the units down either side and put in a small Island down the middle, measuring approx 1.75m long, you get unit space combined of 6.89m. Plenty!! Plus, as you've demolished the conservatory you now get your light back. I think that if you were to approach one of the great concept planners on here. they'd be able to do this professionally for you. Or, you could have the plans checked over by a builder and drawn up yourself of course.

sheesh I thought with a rectangular shaped kitchen things would be simple! This is definitely a learning process! I think if if we Switched to the 600 mm cabinet instead of the 900 corner unit we’d have to have a 50 mm ’filler’ unit or something to allow the over door to open enough....hopefully I can get him to just hold off on putting more things in until it arrives so we could see how it works....I have such limited time outside of work and don’t have a job I can just swing an hour off from to go to showrooms and thints, so I just ordered the range cooker online after reading reviews. They all seem to come in either 90, 100 or 110 cm, so I just went with the smallest ‘standard’ one. when we first reserved the house I asked if I could modify the kitchen a bit, specifically put a range cooker in. He said no problem (it’s a small local developer, not one of the big companies) and that I could work out all the plans with their kitchen planner....I spent about 2 hours with her and went through a lot more emailing her back and forth to get it right...some good that’s done! im thinking the range cooker along the wall won’t work either unless I lose the peninsula thing altogether because there’s not enough room- which would sacrifice a load of counterspace....unfortunately we need the door to the living room otherwise there’s no way between the kitchen and living room without going outside! Hi Sarah, Huge rug under dining table - big yes! As I mentioned before, just make sure it it doesn't have a deep pile and is fairly easy to clean / hoover. This will break up the black considerably! The rug size needs to be big enough to pull all your chairs out and they still sit on the rug - that's the minimum right size. Just a thought about finding the right paint colour for your walls and cabinets to brighten everything up. When my family took a trip down to cornwall, we stayed in this lovely cottage in the country-side. The cottage had small little deep windows, so didn't get much light in. However the cottage was so bright, warm & crisp. It had been painted a white that really really worked - white can be tricky to get right. So I called the owners of the cottage to see if they had a paint can laying around so I could find out the exact colour. It was straight Brilliant White - standard paint you can get for kitchens, walls, ceilings, masonry, etc in whatever finish you need (matt, sheen, semi-gloss or gloss). I've used it a couple of times sinse to freshen up or update an area, to make small spaces pop, or just to bring a whole space that crisp - perfect white look to show off art and objects (it is one of the few whites that can do so well as art and objects usually look dull or get lost with a plain white background). This might help with your project as it is the best paint for reflecting light and brightening your areas - but it is bright - so you will have to do a test area to see if it is too bright for you, in which case go with a white toned down from that. Think the rug(s) & the paint colour change of walls & cabinets will work the best for you since you've spent a lot on your interior already and your husband likes it as is - it is hard to justify large costs when your partner thinks it is great and you've already spent a lot.. Hi Hans If you are considering knocking down the wall between the kitcchen and dining room then I would block up the door from the dining room to the lounge. This would then give you more usuable space in both rooms. Are you looking to change the layout of your kitchen too ? Or just remove the wall ?
