Can’t remove curtains from pole

Hi guys. So the flat we live in came with ready hung curtains, and whilst we were able to swap them out in other rooms (the poles were longer and came off in two parts) we’ve been stuck with the ones in our bedroom because I cannot for the life of me work out how to get the pole down. It is a wooden pole with finials on both ends (which I have removed) but the pole wont budge from the wooden brackets its enclosed in. The bracket has a screw in the underside on both ends, but losening the screw does absolutely nothing. Shy of attempting to remove the entire bracket from the wall, i can’t think of what else to try. Any ideas?

I would have said that screw was holding the pole in but if you have already tried to remove it to no avail then maybe not. Will the pole slide out one end? Perhaps the pole has swollen and is just stuck? Can you try to twist it around for movement? Other to that take the whole lot down.

Some of these fittings have a “peg” on the loop which slots into the bit fixed to the wall. Maybe the screw is to release that, so you undo it then pull the loop fixing straight out? Not sure how the pole is then removed however!

Hi Lauren, Reading this I think you don't love it yet because there is too much contracts between the dark sofa and the light wall. Paint the wall, don't worry about light- that is a massive window. Don't worry about it feeling smaller - it won't I also agreed that the curtains need to be on a wider pole or the window should be dressed with an additional something (wood slatted blind?)

When hanging curtains for clients I always have the hems just hovering above the floor so would consider your curtains too short. From the photo it looks like you cannot lower the pole position, so letting down the hems is your best solution. Leaving the curtains in situ, carefully unpick the hem and iron out crease lines (ironing board can be positioned at the window), you can then turn a new minimum hem using iron-on hem tape. Ideally your curtains should be no more than an inch off the floor to give them the made-to-measure look.

As as a second thought you could have have a double width curtain and when the curtains are not drawn together pull the curtain back so it's on the left hand side only. By doing this you could have a longer pole over the left hand side. Add a tie back so it shows part of the curtain from the outside and by doing this it will give you plenty of daylight as the majority of the fabric will be stored on the left hand side on the wall so not blocking the actual window.

Hi Jack, You said you want curtains and also wanted a really neat and balanced solution. The problem with curtains is that they will always have to be pushed to the side to get in and out of inward-opening doors. As there is some space between the top of the doors and the ceiling, yes, another option is blinds. When these are closed they will nestle in that space above the doors, you won't need curtain poles, and there are several different types of blinds that can be compressed tight into that space. Yes, velvet curtains soften a room, however, as blinds come in so many different colours and patterns these days, the right choice could also do that. And you could still have your preference of “dark green / teal." In the two bedrooms, blinds with a blackout fabric would block the unwanted light you mentioned. Furthermore, if they were remote-controlled they could be operated from bed, or even have timers so they opened and closed automatically at set times of the day and night. In the end it’s such a personal decision – some people love curtains and others love blinds. Hope that helps. Joy

Ignore what I said above,the picture clearly shows the screw going into the pole, not the fixing! 🤦‍♀️

Thank you both! It was actually a really simple solution, my brain just couldn’t fathom at first. 😅 The wall brackets themselves were lose, so they were sagging and putting pressure on the bracket and the screw, so no matter how much i turned the screw it made no difference. 🤦‍♀️ I finally twigged though, and after tightening the bracket, i now have a fresh pair of curtains up! Hoorah.
