Oh dear, I hope your company didn't lay them... The problems are legion, but the most striking mistake is in the layout. The tiles do not follow the line of the stairs, nor are they symmetrical. This will ALWAYS make the hall look lopsided. When you add in the colour scheme and lack of other period features, the owners have a problem. Are these encaustic tiles? The colour is far from traditional for a hallway and as others have said- more suited for a bathroom/utility room. If they are encaustic, why not move them to the garden and make a Mediterranean courtyard? The hall can then be inviting rather than blinding.

I love the tiles and I don't think they are too busy. I might be biased, because I have very similar tiles in my pantry, which is of course much smaller than a kitchen, but still... My theory is: a smaller pattern merges into one, while a larger pattern forces your eyes to follow the lines, so the larger pattern is much more overpowering. Just my theory though. I'm hoping to prove it with the enclosed photos :-D I think they will look fabulous!

Hi Lorna, Ok so there's a couple of things to consider so firstly you have an upstand already and tiles and upstand's are not normally mixed together. I totally understand your dilemma though and I would recommend a couple of things. 1) It might be a better idea to paint the walls in specialised kitchen/bathroom paint which can be wipeable and does not leave any marks on the wall. Trust me this is what I have done in my own kitchen and it works a treat. I highly recommend Farrow & Ball Modern Emulsion: https://www.farrow-ball.com/our-finishes/modern-emulsion Secondly you may want to consider painting the units a contrasting colour and give it a modern look if you are considering painting the walls. 2) If you really are dead set about having tiles you might want to consider going for a simple cream tile and in keeping with the current colours if you are not painting the units. Thanks guys, well in that case I will call into b and q it as is not too much further. (plus we need to buy some other stuff from there too) I am not sure we will be able to find out whether it was skimmed over as the house was built in the 80's and we have only lived here 3 years.. I am tempted to go to b and q and ask someone there then they might persuade him/ advise. I will remember sugar scrub too, I didn't think of that!
