Hello
We are renovating our house which is now all planned but keep drawing a blank with what to do with the patio /garden. We are replacing the conservatory and will have bifolds onto the garden.
These are the main points

the patio has always been to small it is 2.5 m at widest depth but it’s a balance between widening the patio and losing lawn
We need to incorporate the triangular
bit or improve the look
we have neighbours building a large extension next door and would like to plan some screening

I have added photos to give the idea and have marked where we are thinking of moving the patio out to. The garden faces SW

Hi there,

It does look like the patio area is a bit too small. It is hard to tell for sure, but it looks like your lawn area is not small at all and you could use some of it to extend your patio. To do that you will need to re-do your retaining walls as you will have to level the new area up with the existing patio.

Are you happy with seating in the patio where it is (mostly very sunny I suppose as per the aspect) or would you rather maybe to create a new seating area somewhere a bit more shady? That is something to think about.

Hi Emma, a wide narrow garden is a difficult shape to deal with. It's harder to split into rooms than a long, narrow garden, but not impossible with some careful design. I love the idea of sinking things - trampolines, seating areas, etc as it give the garden more interest and makes it seem larger. Stepping down into a seating area also gives more privacy as you are lower. I designed this Bracknell, Berkshire garden which is wide and narrow by creating different spaces in the garden for different purposes - a breakfast terrace, a small outdoor kitchen, a dining area and a more informal seating area. The garden is useable by all members of the family including kids and dogs as well as grown ups. The garden is used predominantly for dining and parties. Here's the plan for that garden. I set the garden on the diagonal as it helps to distract attention away from the boundaries so that the garden seems larger. I also raised the borders as this gives visual interest and increases the perceived size and depth of the garden. Try using circular shapes in the garden if there's room as this also gives interest, focuses attention within the garden and creates the illusion of greater space.

A few things strike me. Firstly cutting that grass with a lawn mower not a strimmer should be a lot quicker. My front and back lawn must be about is at least 150 square meters and my teenager can do the lot in less than half an afternoon. Anyway, if you really hate doing it, that’s probably a pointless comment 😂. However, £7000 could probably buy a lot of hired lawn mowing service or a robotic mower as someone mentioned. Secondly, I know Sonia’s garden looks lovely and you probably think you couldn’t do it but I bet you could. Keeping things alive in planters is much more difficult as they will dry out more quickly, run out of nutrients and constantly need refreshing. If you gave yourself quite a deep border into the point of your garden (where you currently have a tree in the diagram) you could plant some decent size shrubs too that would probably only need an annual trim. I would also consider growing something up the fence to soften it a bit. Maybe your bottom right green circle could have a water feature in it? Or something to give a bit of height like an obelisk to grow climbers up. I wish I knew how to add photos from Houzz for inspiration. Otherwise, I think your mock up looks lovely and your seating area within easy reach of the kitchen will be great. Just out of interest, where do you get the sun most?

This is a very crude attempt at subtly changing your plans. It would require more internal modification to move a wall which you may not consider worth it but I wondered whether the utility would be better as a longer and narrower room to incorporate outdoor access (for laundry, muddy feet / boot room, etc) rather than having outdoor access from the study with the wasted ‘corridor’ past the bathroom. This would also make a wider second living space which could have double doors to link it to the lounge so that you could open it up for larger family occasions or close it off for smaller events / everyday.
