Hello, beautiful pathway. Would you mind sharing the size of each stepping stone/concrete? Also, what is the distance between each step (ie. the space between each step)? thank you so much!

Hi there, If my memory is correct those are 2' x 4' with 4" gaps in between.

Hi Sarah, I would DEFINITELY go with electric. Re the comment above about energy use, unless your spending the entire day operating them then the energy use is zero and nominal. They come with (as you're probably aware) with a great remote, very easy to use. The sensor on them is also amazing in that if it starts to rain they close automatically. I've just moved to a property with 5 sky lights. They're all manual and its a total pain!! I don't get why you'd employ blinds during the day - isn't there anything better than natural light inside? Being north facing your not going to cook and besides on a sunny day through the doors open and feel like your cooking in the garden. I'd probably opt to have 2 large velux only along one side - which ever is hit by the sunlight and skip the light above the door - that's a saving which you could spend on higher spec. The cost of the wiring for this isn't considerable, especially given its new work. Good luck!

I am aware that this doesn’t tick every box but I hope this inspires you. In my opinion your current layout gives you maximum cabinet and worktop space to accommodate everything you want but you don’t like that layout as there is too much walking around. My alternative has a more compact working area. I note you wanted a sink with drainer- perhaps you could be persuaded with one big simple sink and two dishwashers and vow to never wash a pot again! I also thought that if the kitchen had insufficient space for all of the cookbooks they could go in the dining area which might help retain the clean lines of the handleless kitchen you have your eye on.

Thanks for your comments so far; it’s really helpful to get other points of view. Maths Wife, I’m with you on the pantry idea! In fact, I spent a long time trying to work out if we could put one there by getting decent-width access to the garden via another route. But coming through from the front door involves a narrow hallway and getting through several internal doors, and coming via the utility room would involve losing washing space to add a door, and a sharp right-hand turn. Apart from the fact that we’ll ultimately re-landscape our entire garden, which will all need to come through the house, I also sometimes use a mobility scooter, and although I don’t intend to take it into the house, I’d rather be safe than sorry in terms of access. We’re compensating for the lack of pantry by planning on turning the area outside those doors into a little shaded patio with small table/chairs. So in theory we could have those doors wide open in the summer, and have garden views from both ends of the kitchen. minnie101, I didn’t explain the meals for 30 very well . We set up another table in the playroom in those cases, so about half the people in each room. So in the kitchen I just want to make sure that we can have table fully extended whenever we need it, which seats about 14. For the drinks area, yes we’re debating having bifold doors so there is max countertop space for a small sink, kettle etc. As you say, it makes sense and saves the countertop space elsewhere, just makes for an expensive cupboard The roof lantern size is indeed limited by the fact that’s the only area of the kitchen that isn’t double storey. Other than squaring out a corner, we are keeping to the current footprint, as it’s just about on maximum extension already. That area, in a bizarre design choice by the previous owners, is currently the utility room, which just about blocks any view onto the garden - we need the lights on even in summer, despite that being a south facing view. I’ve spent most of the last 6 years trying to understand WHY someone would choose that layout as part of a fairly substantial extension, even going so far as to move the kitchen, which was south facing, to the other end of the room. I’ve yet to think of a sensible explanation…. We are going for a fairly timeless/modern country look, hence the orangery rather than bifolds, and also want to maximise the light as it’s a long room. Fingers crossed, it will look something like this, although with a lot more planting around it and step-free patio.

The door thing is interesting. At least I think so! Maybe you would like to know why doors are hung the way they are? Traditionally in the UK doors are hung so they open with the leaf going into the room. This does two things. Firstly it makes the room a bit more private. So if you're doing something in the room and someone else comes in then they don't see immediately what you're up to, but you have a bit of notice that they are coming in before they see you. This means you can quickly hide anything that you don't want to be revealed to the other person. This is more of a thing if you have staff and then you want to maintain some level of privacy from them. Secondly it helps with draughts. Older houses are especially leaky and you can feel the movement of air. That air movement has a kind of internal wind chill factor. When you have the doors opening into the room then it slows down the flow of air, because it has to go around the door instead of straight in, so you can reduce that air movement a bit. In warmer countries, like Spain, where they want to keep doors open and out of the way so they can maximise air movement to cool the space down, then traditionally they have the doors opening against the wall. This way they can keep them held open more easily and have more air flow. In more modern or upgraded homes the draughts are not so much of an issue, and most of us don't have house staff that we want to keep things private from. So it can make sense to have the doors rehung. It's worth knowing the reasons behind the way they're hung, so you can be more selective. Perhaps in some rooms you would like to maintain that privacy, perhaps in a bathroom, and then you could hang the door in a way that works best. It's a lot easier to get furniture in and out when you hang the door to open against the wall. Hope that's interesting for you!!
