Fireplace renovation ideas

We currently have this fireplace (we think 1960s) that is very small (550 x 605) and is basically just a hole in the wall. What could we do to make this look nicer? I’d like the fireplace to be the feature of the lounge. We’d thought about a log burner with a beam etc but they’re out of our budget. We are planning to remove the bricks and existing hearth and have walls skimmed and new carpet.
