I have been a wood flooring professional for over 30 years, so my response might be more detailed than you want! I'll break it down into several issues and you can choose which bits might help you the most. Color: If you have children, a medium stain/wood might serve you better because dark floors show dust and dirt. Wear: A wood that has a stain on it that is much diferent from the wood's own natural color, will show scratches more than a wood with no stain. A matte or semi-gloss finish will show fewer scratches and wear. Composition: What is your subfloor and where are you located? Both these factors will help determine the material to use. Solid- This flooring is made from pieces of wood that are one solid piece from top to bottom. So, if you want oak, the wood is all oak. It can come from the mill already stained and finished (prefinished), or it can be finished at the jobsite after being installed and sanded. Engineered- Engineered hardwood flooring is constructed of two components, a ‘core layer’ on the bottom, topped by the ‘face veneer’. The veneer, or wear layer can be of differing thicknesses. The thicker the wear layer, the more times the product can be sanded. The core layer is constructed of multiple layers of wood which can be of the same or of a different species, glued together in a cross-hatch configuration. This cross graining provides greater dimensional stability, minimizing the expansion and contraction that natural wood exhibits when exposed to varying moisture levels and temperatures. It can come from the mill already stained and finished, or it can be finished at the jobsite after being installed and sanded. If you are going to install one area now and another later, you might want to choose an unfinished product that can be sanded and finished at the jobsite. You also want to ensure that you keep a record of the materials used on the first section so that you can match the second section after the color has changed. They will both end up the same (or at least very similar) color after a few years, but they will both change over time. The other way that you can ensure that they match is to purchase enough prefinished (which has the stain and finish applied at the factory/mill) material for both areas at the same time. For the best match, mix the wood from all the boxes for the first floor, then repackage the rest. Store it in a dry place until you are ready to install it in the other area. Purchase products and hire a professional that are members of the National Wood Flooring Association. They set the standards for and provide education for our trade. They offer certifications in installation and in sand and finish which oprovide homeowners further assurance of skill and competence.

Hello Lucy, Two things I thought might be nice to do is to spray paint the rad the same colour as the blue of the wall it's sitting on. In this way it's discreet and blends with the colour it's situated with. Zinsser123 is a good primer which adheres to metal from which you can use the colour you used for that portion of the wall. I also wanted to suggest tiles for behind the sink that again compliment the wall colour.. So the eye takes in the room as a whole rather than dart to the tiles. This also works with your two tone scheme and shows this off to it's advantage.. If you could reposition the mirrored cabinet (or see further for another idea) you could possibly find a large mirror to hang which fits more of this wall space and in this way draws the eye upwards.. Something visually stunning in a old silver would work with the mint and grey scheme.. Going back to the cabinet.. If you had something slim in depth but bigger in width dimensionally from your current, it could be more useful. It could be made from wood and painted grey to compliment the upper portion of the wall above the rad.. In this way it too can blend with the scheme.. Being narrow but long could be a benefit as you can house all inside it. It could be in 3 separate units if you wanted to split them up. Consider sliding doors with a finger hole for a simple and stylish finish that can simply be painted to blend with the grey portion of the wall.. Not only will this free the space above sink and loo for something visually more exciting like a mirror which will also lend itself to the idea of scale and light with the appearance of more space in the bathroom and light.. Your glass panel for the bath is also another nice idea as this again gives an open and stylish finish to the shower part of the bath.. Simple ideas that can have a big impact.. Then lovely accessories and possibly faux foliage for a relaxing soak.. : )) Bevelled Venetian style finish for sophisticated look.. I have specifically not chosen bathroom mirrors as I personally hate them... They quite simply aren't stylish.. and having spent more than 20 years sitting in front of mirrors with lighting putting on performance makeup and checking my bun! I have to say... no! The faux plant idea could be something to sit above the cistern to again draw the eye upward.. This one pictured is faux can be large leaved fronds if you prefer in a vase but you get the idea... Nice reflections are made from it and the mirror... A simple smallish shelf painted the colour of the wall it's sitting on could house the plant or something nice that you like the idea of..

It's Farrow&Ball Green Blue, so I think you both probably get a point!! Although what you say is interesting because I really dislike the cold feel of the room during the day which might be the blue coming out more. I really like strong blues like navy but can't stand lighter blues and pastels so maybe that is the issue. I certainly prefer the room at night as it has a much warmer feel and looks more green. Maybe we should opt for a different colour after all.

Dear Devon kitchen co - you seem unsure yourselves of the design... My first thoughts are with the layout, the position of tall and upper units; it looks like you would walk into the room and feel that these are on top of you, especially the wall unit next to the chimney breast and then the tall units straight ahead of you; the balance just feels wrong. I would always try to place tall units in a way that makes them recede. Open shelving and glass cabinets always help. Difficult when you are working with a smaller space and the brief is demanding, you are also working with two corner solutions and had to create a U shaped kitchen to get everything in. If those tall units opposite the entrance are fridge and freezer, I would play with placing them down the far end of the kitchen and fill that in completely either side with other storage units maybe down onto the worktop, so that they create a wall of units, this would mean you would have a galley either side for surfaces, sink and hob etc,alternatively I would debate the use of under-counter appliances, fridge drawers maybe. Again difficult if your client needs greater capacity and has no-where else for secondary appliances such as a utility room. Very difficult to comment really unless you are in front of the plan and know the client brief. Hope it goes well - Laurane
