Is our kitchen too small for my dream design?

This is my first post, and I'm open to any and all advice!

We're buying a small seaside flat with a kitchen measuring 3 x 3.5m. We want to create something different (heard that one before?!!), and I love the idea of:

Floor-to-ceiling shallow pantry shelves/ cupboards and the shallowest fridge/ freezer we can find.
A central island with an oven, sink, dishwasher, and shelving
That's it! No other cupboards on the wall.

My husband (whose hair is going greyer by the minute) has come up with this design below as a compromise, but I wonder if there are other ideas we haven't thought about:

It does sound a bit too small to me. Is this a second home or a main residence?

Thanks for your question, Paul. It's for my husband and me as our only home. We both work from home, and although we don't have loads of stuff, we love to cook and socialise, so it's tricky to find a layout that will work for us. I wonder if the consensus will be to follow the existing layout ;-)

I've attached a pic of the current kitchen.

Wow yes lots to waken up to and I'm so grateful for the help! Thanks so much! I tried mforr to find one o those room colouring things for a shop here in the uk and whilt you can do it with dulux paint brand, it didnt seem to like my iPad so need to get onto it on my laptop! Having slept on it I'm thinking I like the idea of doing the kitchen only in colour, and then having highlights of the colour in the LR with cushions perhaps. We considered curtains too but I'm not sure if it would crowd the LR. We are sure that the coffee table is too big also, but I love it (it has a glass top and we can present things in the drawer below). We also have no dining table so this is our only space for setting out food! I'm still liking the green, but the yellow goes well too. We have a tea/coffee jars on our kitchen work top (might be just visible in the pictures) which are green yellow and grey, so if I bring these along to the DIY shop they could colour match those for me. (Along with the list you sent me too mforr!) I will def be back on to show you all the results!! :)

Rather than knocking walls completely, can you knock parts of wall A and B to achieve an open plan feel, but leaving some walls for units? It's hard to advise you though without seeing the full floor plan. Also, are you totally committed to a tall oven unit? Would you go for a built under oven?

Those windows look great Claire ! This kitchen design looks ok - but if you are opening up the windows into a bar then echo that with an also slightly unconventional idea perhaps - using a BORA induction hob - which can be fitted ( unusually - but the manufacturers say this is ok) in place if the sink under the window ... the hob itself has a built in extract system - so no extractor needed - and allows you to keep a flatter surface there and entertain your guests by cooking for them while they perch outside ! By moving the sink to where the hob area was allows you to take the DW out of the corner to the end of the run so it's easier to load and unload without being in the way. I like modern but this particular modern kitchen looks like it is cheaper than the traditional option. In my opinion if you are going to do contemporary you need to do more than just put a flat fronted door on a standard kitchen and it doesn’t have to be white to be contemporary. I think that modern with a handle groove rather than j handle, wide drawers and more than one texture is the way to do contemporary. Personally I think the worktop overhang to make a breakfast bar is a bit suburban too.

Here are my ideas. I just hope I’ve put the WC in an alcove and not a doorway 🤞. In both, the window wall takes all the 600 deep appliances, full height Fridge/Freezer, Dishwasher and sink. The orange are your full height reduced depth shelves. If I’ve got your measurements right then if these were 300mm deep you could then have an island with 900mm clearance all around which I believe is the minimum recommended. Nominally this island would be 900mm deep but could be squeezed a bit to achieve good circulation space around it. You could use a linear hob here to help out. The second option is a version inspired by my own kitchen (pic 3) where we have a peninsula protruding from our storage wall instead of an island. You could have a much deeper peninsula than island here (ours is 1350/1400 deep I think). In our wall is the oven, microwave, fridge, freezer, double larder unit and as you can see a TV. Unfortunately the middle part of ours is hiding a huge chimney breast so isn’t actually storage.

Paul, thank you so much for sharing these brilliant ideas. I like the idea of opening the space and making a statement island. We could then dispense with the dining nook idea we would try to squeeze into the sitting room.

You haven't the space for an island

Think about opening an oven door with island behind and space to stand etc

Room is too small

Go to a Kitchen Designer for assistance as changing electrical points after 1st fix is messy?

Design a layout and be 110% and adhere to it
