help with hallway planning please!

My hallway is small and this is what we’ve done with it for the last 5 years. We really need a place for shoe and coats storage. As you can see the show cabinets are small and my husbands larger shoes and our boots etc don’t fit in there. The extra shoes all outside do not make for a good look!

The narrow hall and the 2 windows with the wall jutting out a little as you can see makes things difficult. The stairs come down onto it and there is a toilet under the stairs. There is a very small area under stairs where I put a small number of things but the meters and WiFi router are also there so cannot do much more with that space.

Is this the best we can do with this space? I can get something bespoke made for storage but we haven’t really settled on anything.

In my ideal situation I would like good shoe and coats storage (hidden) with perhaps a small seat for people to sit on (not a biggie as they can sit on the stairs). I would’ve loved some plants to decorate but it adds to the clutter rather than take away from it.

Any ideas would be really appreciated. Thank you!

Costs and shoes are the nemesis of any hallway aren’t they! Unfortunately it looks like the majority of your wall space is taken up with doors and windows isn’t it. If you really want to gain more wall space you could consider filling in the window closest to the door as you have light from the door and window anyway. That would give you wall hanging space for coats. If you moved the mirror to the other wall could you have a double height shoe cupboard there. Then at bottom of stairs where you have shoe holder you could remove and have a narrow bench with cubbies underneath for taller boots? Our coat rack always ends up looking like a mountain and every now and again I have to go through and put lesser used coats away elsewhere in the house. A fancy solution I have seen is pull out drawers that slide under the stairs but I don’t know if you have the space at the lower end due to your loo

Thank you for this! Yes unfortunately the pull out storage is not possible under the stairs.
Before we put these shoe holders in I did speak to a carpenter or two about making bespoke fixed storage along the wall below the windows but 5 years ago their quotes were so high I shudder to think what they’d be now! Also it’s hard to commit to it when I didn’t know how exactly they would turn out for us and our needs..

Yes I think periodically filtering out the coats and shoes is key, always more problematic in winters but let’s see.. I really wanted to put some plants in the space and I did for a while have a monstera under the stairs but it makes it look more cluttered.

Greys and mustard yellow are fabulous together. Why not paint the hand rails and newell posts the same dark grey as the feature wall that you have planned for behind your console table? Keep the rest of your woodwork white for airiness, spindles, doors & architraves. Will look beautiful x

I agree - I ended up removing altogether or switching the opening direction on a bunch of doors in my house so they worked better with the layout and furniture. To me the best option is pocket doors which allow the space to be completely open or closed off when needed but you still get a solid wall either side to put furniture up against. They seem to be more common in America and really need planning at the early stages so the 'pocket' can be built in from the beginning.

Hi all, Thank you for your comments; I appreciate them! Natasha - the units you have suggested are very much what I had in mind. We will have a shaker kitchen and the media unit would also be shaker style and would have 4-6 cupboards with the TV in the middle with book shelves either side. Part of the reason we kept a partial wall was to make the space more usable. I can’t envision how the fully open plan room will be able to meet all our needs, but I am open to ideas! I feel that open plan would be more impressive, but potentially less usable. With regards to the doors. I do plan to reverse the doors both into the kitchen and family room part, but couldn’t work out how to do it on the app I used for the floor plan. It is a 1920s house and we have the original doors which we are planning to keep. We are also keeping a lot of floor space as when the table is not extended, we still have young children with lots of Lego and trains etc. I plan for these to be hidden in the cupboards at bedtime. J - we haven’t installed the kitchen but we have ordered it and paid a big deposit. Some of the units are bespoke/irregular sizes and I don’t think we would be willing to change this. It is a bit of a pity to have the staircase crossing the new larger hall. Would it work to rotate the stair as Jonathan has shown but pull it towards the front door and put the loo underneath at the back. That would mean you have to put a slope on the roof of the hall extension so the stair could run up under it but from what I can see it might work ok with the other pitched roofs of the house. You would have to make the landing window smaller (or lose it completely) but you might also be able to open up the space between the hall and the landing creating the feel of a double height space. If all the headroom requirements work I don't think that would require altering the first floor plan. Quite a bit of structural work though!
