Extratlr hood sitting on splashback

Hi all

In need of some advisor please, in final stages of new kitchen. Just had quartz worktop installed and went to install extractor hood and realised the quartz splashback is too high. The bottom of the tilted angled hood is now sitting on top of the quartz splashback. We are happy to attach it to the quartz but finding the chimney for the hood is now not flush with the wall. Any suggestions???!

It depends on how high the Quartz is. If it’s only a couple of cm higher then move the extractor up. Most extractors and hob have guidelines about the minimum distance required ranging from 50cm to 65cm…… however they never mention a maximum.

If the Quartz is very high consider having additional Quartz all the way up the wall to resolve the problem of an uneven surface for the extractor

Do you have shelves or wall cupboards either side of the extractor that might hide the problem? I agree with Jonathan that the height of the extractor is not cast in stone. It's a recommended minimum. The extraction will not be as efficient but if we're talking 10mm or so it's not the end of the world. The solution depends on how much of a perfectionist you are. If it was constantly in my line of vision as being not straight it would drive me crazy. I'm sure it won't be noticeable once it is all finished. Lesson learned for next time.

I thought I'd update everyone as to what we settled on as most of you won't have seen the finished post. Went went for Little Greene French Pale Grey on the walls and then a Grey Quartz worktop which had worked quite well. To stop it from being clinical, we opted for some textured wallpaper in the dining area which is Bala Storm (I think) from John Lewis. We then added some natural tones using a wooden table, and then Vitra chairs. Along with wooden fruit bowl etc. The main window will have wooden venetian blinds, and the bay windows will probably be done in a darker grey material as the perfect fit style blinds you find in conservatories

Hi Catherine, You have a lovely open plan kitchen and lounge, but as you say, it lacks punch and interest. Since you're stuck with the stainless steel kitchen for the time being, you need to work with it and have some fun. A symmetrical arrangement of stainless steel shelves either side of the splash back for the cooker would allow you to put up interesting bottles, plants, china, etc. What about painting this wall a bright colour like Seville Orange from Crown and the other walls in natural white. You could also paint the base of the island in the Seville Orange. In the seating area, use the orange colour and some others like plum or blue-grey in fabric patterns, have cushions made up for the seating area. Also an area rug large enough for the front feet of your sofas and the coffee table to sit on with colour would brighten up this area. It's unfortunate that the TV is blocking a French window. Can it be moved somewhere else, perhaps the bay if the bottom shutters are never opened? Ikea Kitchens are excellent, the attention to quality is superb. Lots of suppliers only offer doors in particular sizes, which is why when you go to an appointment at Wickes for example and you then take it to Howdens, they often have to swap the cabinets around as they don't all do all the sizes. Factoring in that you may want to change the doors in a few years at this point is in my opinion daft. You buy a kitchen and it should last 10-15 years. Magnet and Howdens offer great kitchens too. However, I have personal experience of fitting an Ikea Kitchen last year and was very impressed. I've used Howdens several times too. There are many companies however, that offer custom sizes when ordering replacements such as Kitchen door workshop and Kitchen Door Outlet to name but two. Saying that you can't replace the doors, just simply isn't accurate.

Hi Jamie If you choose to keep your curved glass extractor, there don't really a "rule" when it comes to their splashbacks and it's up to you and your budget. For that location, I think you'd go the full width of the glass and as there is such a small space between that and the oven, I'd fill that and make it equal on the other side, maybe even to the window if that will be a silly sliver. For height, you have a few options: Ask if the granite can be curved to match the extractor shape go straight up behind the glass to the highest point of the intake section Make a bold design choice and go to the ceiling If you choose a smaller extractor, you would match the width 600mm and run to the underside or again, behind the extractor and to the ceiling. good luck Emily x

Here is a picture, it’s pretty high up anyway and the hood is a massive tilted angle one. The problem is if we sit it on top of quartz then the brackets can’t go in because of the plugs etc We have a piece of quartz that will fill the space of the chimney but again the plugs get in the way. Massive balls up and totally my fault!

I don't think this is your fault at all. There should have been better communication between the fitter/electrician and the worktop fitters. I am guessing that the worktop was supposed to stop in line or just below the extractor. It would have been better if the extractor was already fitted as they would have seen the problem before fixing the splashback. Your hob is now fitted so I don't think you want them trying to remove the splashback. Can you chose a different extractor?

The extractor and/or the hob instructions may well have a minimum height for installation, if not than the minimum height over an electric hob is 650mm, for gas 750mm. Which looks in your photo is what you have, i'd get you electrician back and get him to fit a flex outlet in a suitable position so the extractor will fit and have the fused spur in an accessable position like they're supposed to do. If your fuse were to go you'd have to dismantle your extractor to change it.
