Match patio door to upstairs windows?

Our architect has specified anthracite aluminium patio doors for our extension but the windows will be white upvc to match the rest of the house. I’m worried the grey aluminium will look odd as there is a window relatively near (see drawing), and not sure whether to do white aluminium doors or white upvc doors?

Aluminium for the bifolds in either the white or grey will look fine.

It’s ok that they don’t match. Choose a colour that suits the brick as your windows might eventually get changed. Personally I don’t think anthracite suits many houses and I would be disappointed that this was the architects go to colour when there are so many other colours.

Hi Dawn, Love your new kitchen! We offer a system called PerfectFit, which allows blinds to sit inside the uPVC frames of windows or patio doors. They clip in neatly, without the need for drilling, and then become an integral part of the window, which means they won't flap about in the window. ED Thank you for your posts, As a quick guide when comparing the efficiency of steel doors to timber or UPVC doors , the U -value should be looked at, the lower it is the more energy efficient the door would be. For doors where more than half of the whole door area is glazed (patio), look for a U value of 1.8 W/(m²K), or better (lower). The U- value of our steel doors is 1.50 W/m2K The U – value for standard external wooden door would have a u-value of 2.5-3 W/m2K The U – value for UPVC doors will be between 0.9 – 1.5W However, our steel Windows and Doors got thinner and more delicate frame. Their slender lines appear to lose weight and give lightness to the frames, emphasizing the transparency of a facade. This elegance is difficult to match with the bulky profiles of alternative materials.

Also had similar issues. To my mind anthracite or black windows can look good IF they are done well - they look good when they are good quality windows with modern flat profiles, fitted to a house which has had proper architectural consideration. The problem now is that all the cheaper upvc double glazing companies are doing them with thick frames and chamfered profiles, and they can look clunky and old fashioned rather than sleek and considered. Our sliding doors only came in 4 colour choices, so in the end we have gone for RAL7021 (a soft black) for those - on the modern rear extension - with RAL7006 (beige grey) aluminium composite windows elsewhere on our 1930s house. The sliding doors are in and the 7021 does look really good, almost invisible as the frames are very slim, and I think it works because it's the very modern extension. The windows aren't in yet so I can't comment on how it's all going to work together. I am keeping my fingers crossed...! Our windows will be Velfac which are alu outside, painted timber inside and you can choose different colours for interior/exterior. They weren't as expensive as I thought they were going to be, so it's worth getting a quote for aluminium composite windows before you decide.
