Plant suggestions for corner of front garden

Would love to get some advice / suggestions for what to plant in this corner of my property. The aim is to mostly hide the fence panelling.

- This is in the front garden

- Fence panel is approx. 75cm wide x 165cm high

- Soil is mostly clay, this corner often gets very soggy (but not totally waterlogged) during heavy rain

- The plant will be north facing (photo is looking south / south west)

- Looking for something low maintenance and evergreen

- Being right next to the property, the roots should be safe next to foundations, and also the plant shouldn’t cause extreme moisture level changes (given the clay soil)

I was wondering if Euonymus japonicus might be a good option? Though I’m not sure if that satisfies my last point about roots next to the property?

Euonymus is fine to plant next to the house but I doubt you will buy a very big one and since they are slow growing you will probably move before it hides the fence. Consider Laurel instead- also slow growing but bigger specimens are available. I also like photinia.

Hydreangea Annabelle's love shade and clay but they do require a lot of watering to become established. It has stunning huge white flowers. Not sure how quicky they grow. I would invest in a larger specimen of whatever you chose. You could also stain the fence dark grey to knock it back a bit. This would protect the timber too.

I think a relaxed cottage style would suit your garden. Things like lavender, thyme, Cistus, geraniums, grasses, anemones, globe thistles. Roses love the sun too. Nice job on the house. Looks very smart:) Personally I prefer to see a hedge in a front garden but with a low wall in front to prevent soil/debris from spilling out on the pavement. Griselinia littoralis has beautiful evergreen apple green foliage that would look lovely against the house, fast growing and can kept trimmed to about eyelevel and 2ft thick. Plus there are many other plants that can be used as hedging depending on your requirements. Yew and privet are also good choices as these can be kept neat and tidy, although privet requires more regular trimming. Your cheapest option however is probably going to be fencing as this will require less ground work. A low wall approx 1ft high will not need much foundation work so also reducing cost. Hedges will need a certain amount of soil preparation but this is something that can easily be done by yourself. I’d ask a few local landscape gardeners to give you a few rough ideas on cost.

So you could remove some of the block pavers, remove the sand then dig in some compost to improve the soil. For privacy you could plant some evergreen shrubs like Viburnum tinus which has winter flowers, Choisya ternata sundance which has golden leaves and white flowers and Ceanothus which has lovely blue flowers in May. You could add one or two taller roses for some summer colour. Not very formal I’m afraid as I just can’t do formal! In order first is Viburnum, Choisya, Ceanothus, a Rose.

If you were to choose a laurel I would opt for Prunus lusitanica as the new growth of the branches are a wonderful crimson colour and the leaves are a lot smaller than normal hedging laurel.

Other options I would consider for the hydrangea is Hydrangea paniculata 'Limelight',

Elaeagnus x submacrophylla 'Limelight', Fatsia japonica for statement leaves or

Mahonia x media 'Charity'.

My favourite large evergreen shrubs are Photinia Red Robin and Fatsia Japonica. They are tough and easy to grow but do get big but can be pruned easily. For a sunnier spot I like Ceanothus but they do need a sheltered spot.
