Suggestions for rough layout of a kitchen in the middle of a house
Comments (24)Hi @Ollie Chambers ah we still haven’t started the work! Mainly delays due to our indecision! We’re starting February now and have decided to go with the kitchen in the ‘middle room’ and the living area in the 3m x 4.5m extension with sliding doors across. The main issue is still the extraction- it’s not a huge space so hob not too far from doors and as having sliding we can open just slightly and have opening roof windows in extension. We’re also having a ducted extractor fitted which will go through the utility (through ceiling) to outside. This can be ducted for 5metres (reducing by 1.2 for every turn) would be too far for you as yours is larger than ours? It’s going to cost quite a lot and we’re still exploring this as I’m not convinced it’s worth the cost as I guess the further the distance to the opening the more reduced the extraction. We cook a lot so we need a system that works. It’s not perfect I’d much prefer to have a window/outside wall for extraction but we have considered every other option and this one suits us best. I think it will be a case of the doors being regularly opened! I don’t have any floor plans etc but am happy to send you some and update you when the work is complete....See Morelayout help new open plan . kitchen in middle of house
Comments (8)One of the plans above relies on removing the kitchen access to the utility so the solution is to make a wc in your laundry room. You could make your kitchen bigger by putting the toilet under the stairs and having a laundry cupboard. If the kitchen was a little larger there would be room to put a table on the end of the island. This could be extendable and could spread into the tv area for high days and holidays....See Morea kitchen sandwiched in the middle
Comments (3)Hi mii2 - looking at the dining room - it is the wall with the round mirror on. Looking at the kitchen , it is the back wall with the tall cupboards on( which is the fridge). The step say / peninsular area to the day room stays . The day room then leads out via bifold to the garden. Hope that makes sense !...See MoreLayout - Too weird to add a bathroom to living room or kitchen/diner?
Comments (14)Idea - on the original downstairs - if the kitchen top/bar came from the bathroom side of the room it might divide up the space better - i.e. kitchen<->dining would not be via/infront of the bathroom door and your natural route to the bathroom would be more along the side of the diner than through it? Perhaps a bar/open room divider might also help the effect? Effectively the right hand side of the house becomes a corridor/thoroughfare even if its not divided like a traditional hallway. Old fashioned perhaps - consider all options - shoe horning open plan into a space 'just because' isn't necessarily the right route. I'd also dig up the original floor plan - i.e. don't necessarily work from where you are now? Just a thought. Or perhaps something like this - pocket door into the diner - might need some tinkering since it nicks the long wall in your lounge as pictured... Bathroom doesn't move though so water in/out is sorted and I'm sure a bathroom can make effective use of under stair space somehow?...See MoreNicola M
