Kitchen/diner/living extension layout
Comments (12)I agree with a lot of what has been said above. We are about to extend our kitchen/diner and have a very small utility room which currently houses a washer, dryer and standalone fridge/freezer (as well as four doors leading off to the kitchen, WC, outside and garage). There is no sink in the utility but we have an integrated fridge in the kitchen. A few thoughts: - Are you sure that you want to place the dishwasher in the utility room? We have plumbing for a dishwasher in the utility but don't own one. When we extend we plan to put the dishwasher as close as possible to the sink as I can't envisage carrying dirty plates etc through to a separate room (and then back again when they are clean). We lived in a new build years ago and the dishwasher was not in the utility; I don't remember noise being an issue. - My brother has engineered oak flooring and oak worktops (separated by white Ikea high gloss units) and it looks good. I would rather have tiles in a utility but am probably biased after experiencing a couple of washing machine leaks. - Have you considered stacking your washer and dryer? We plan to do so as space is so tight in the utility. If you want to maximise utility space I recommend reading George Clarke's 'The Home Bible'. It has a section dedicated to utility room layouts. - Although we plan to have an integrated fridge-freezer in our extension, it currently doesn't bother us to get freezer items from the utility (it would for fridge items). - I agree with bookworm987's suggestion for a new (narrower) dining table and bench seating on one side. From personal experience I can recommend extending dining tables; we have a 90 x 180 cm table which is ideal for everyday use but extends by 45 cm each end to fit family when they visit....See Moreurgent kitchen and bathroom layout suggestions needed
Comments (9)Hello `Sarah, I think the kitchen is fantastic!!! Please keep it!!! So I have some suggestions.. I think it has some great elements.. The design and colour of the cupboards plus those tiles are really fabulous, also love the floor too.. I'd keep it all!!! The top cupboards are gr8 without glass and your image is very different and dare I say not nearly so interesting.. Maybe you can celebrate the uniqueness of it! Minnie is right to suggest moving the cabinets closer to the ceiling (it has been lowered in part but I would leave it as is) easily done without damage and you can move the boiler in line with them.. .. This is a gr8 idea as it will feel a little more open and spacious.. you could then paint above the tiles a lovely warm chalky white or off white.. and any other wall areas.. It will balance the units out and I would definitely keep the colour the same here top and bottom... If you don't want to change the current configuration too much and keep costs down, I would buy a free standing chrome range oven like Smeg dual fuel and extractor Aeg angled hood and fit in same place as current oven.. Dualit toaster and kettle Bugatti Vera in chrome.. Angled extractor hood Aeg and a smeg 50's white fridge would be nice here too! With the fridge I feel it could stand at the end of the counter top.. Leave the sink exactly as it is and the boiler too, all you then need to do is put a cabinet shell and door on the front of the opening where fridge was and paint it and the bits of cabinet that are white to the shade of yellow and voila! Anther storage space for the dishwasher. I would move that metal shelf or add another if you like it.. .. Add a polycarbonate pendant Creatures by Nigel Coates which would look amazing with the kitchen.. Also the kitchen is definitely not past it!!! (added that bit after reading the comment further down) : ))...See MoreOpen plan kitchen/diner/living room layout
Comments (7)I would say first and foremost that as this is a large project, you can't do without a concept planner or someone that can draw up your plans in 3D so that you can 'vitually' walk around what you have in mind. You need to pay attention to your access doorways, they aren't marked on either plan. You will need to have the kitchen on the left and access both the pantry and utility from there. Therefore you will negate the whole of that wall for access to those two rooms. Placement of furniture that you would like / need has to be thought about along with the build. It's just as important. The 1st floor doesn't seem to work as there is no access to the Family Bathroom on the plan. Obviously you know the actual shape of the stairs and there are no dimensions which makes it difficult. However, you may need to create a landing and thus you would, if you use the layout given have to sacrifice one of the bedrooms or change the plan. A planner is essential, one that can give you the rooms sizes that you want and utilise the space available....See MoreKitchen diner living and utility room layout dilemma!
Comments (16)Hi there, We had exactly the same problem about 6 months ago and despite all the squared scale paper in the world, I just couldn't imagine how it was going to look and went round and round in circles! Have you considered a concept planner? We used one and despite the fact I was standing in 3 separate rooms with doors, windows and openings in completely different places, she worked off the architect's plans and came up with photo quality 3D renders showing exactly how the different options would look. We even had a YouTube video of the 4 different layouts, so you could see how it would look as you walked around the room. The pics below show the room I was stood in as our concept planner did the 3D renders, how they actually looked and how the room as turned out. I am a huge fan and find the whole thing quite fascinating- it's like looking i to the future :) Thanks to using them, we were able to order our kitchen before the building work was done, so didn't have to go without a kitchen for ages! How the 3 separate rooms looked when the plans were done by our concept planner... A few of the 3D renders that she did at exactly the same time... And how it turned out.. It's completely cheating but it makes it a lot more fun and in our experience a lot less stressful :) Best wishes, Claire...See Moreshirley
