need your inspiration for this shady corner

This bit of our patio gets no sunlight. It’s also become a bit of a dumping ground. We used to have a barbecue here – not sure if we will replace it. I’d like it to look more of a feature and green and natural. Any inspiration welcome.. Can’t decide if it could be a little vegetable planter for my two-year-old or maybe some clematis up the ugly fence, or a way to do mixed height pots without it looking scattershot? It’s 6ft long.
(Please note it’s in the UK so mild rainy winters, occasional frost and warm summers – but no sunlight at this bit)

If you have no sunlight and you can remember to water occasionally then ferns do very well in shade, The only issue is they like to be damp so lots of mulch. Why not continue the planter idea along the fence? I think clematis needs more sun than you can supply but lots of lovely plants will grow in the shade. Mixed height pots is a great idea. You could also attempt a green wall up the fence. Check light requirements of plants first. Its a myth that everything needs direct sun to grow.

Thanks Isla, yes, largely it’s the fence With nothing that I don’t like looking at so if I can do a green wall, happy to. We might either build the planter or do a brick planter out the front and do either Mediterranean grasses or ferns, or a mix. Was just hoping that there would be something to cover the fence, yes. Also just looked at vegetables that grow in the shade from my little boy, but it looks like pretty much everything needs some sunlight and it gets zero.

Voted for Floral but all of the styles are beautiful in different ways. I imagine floral style that comes with a cosy living room with lots of soft furnishings and a granite fireplace to gather around to.

Initial purchase price, budget and final realistic selling price all dictate what is wise to do. Are there any others for sale/sold in the same road particularly those which have been altered that you can compare with. Having a chat with a few local agents will give a pretty good idea what people want in the area and are prepared to pay for. You may well find that the straight refurbishment is the most cost effective and that some of the nice to haves would only make it quicker/easier to sell rather than add to the selling price. Downstairs wcs are a nice to have, but if it's done at the expense of the layout then probably something to avoid. Generally as long as the exterior is up to scratch particularly roof/windows/guttering, the outside space tidy and the interior plain and clean with a reasonable kitchen and bathroom then it should always sell. If it's for own home then you can take a longer term view with regard to payback.

Hi June. Are you looking for plant suggestions or something else? Are you keeping the stone walls or changing them? I think a Japanese style planting would look good especially as it seems fairly shaded, so a nice acer or two, some low ornamental grasses, ferns and so on. If it gets plenty of sunshine trailing alpine plants might be another thing to consider. Here’s some inspiration:

Obobble and Suzanne C, thanks for the comments. I think the idea of putting the shower and toilet along the right hand wall is a good idea. Do you think there would be room if I put the vanity unit parallel on the opposite left hand wall, rather than underneath the window? (Sorry I like the idea of having a mirror in front of me rather than the window obobble!) Also what do people think are comfortable dimensions for a spacious walk in shower? If I put the shower in the back right hand corner then I’m not tied so much by the width of the window I think as it won’t jut up next to it? Ie it could be wider that 76.5cm?

Unfortunately veg won’t grow well in the shade. Most Mediterranean plants need lots of sun. There is a lovely climber that I have called Climbing Hydrangea which likes shade and self clings so no need to provide support. It’s not evergreen though but you can’t have everything.

Does your toddler have a shady area of the garden with toys? We have a similar book where we’ve put a mud kitchen and blackboard. Our son can play outside and we can still see him from the kitchen.

Otherwise, hostas love shade as well as ferns. Also a lot of alpines so maybe build a vertical rockery
