Currently getting an extension to allow for open plan kitchen dining area. Current plans are attached but would appreciate any ideas/ improvements.

How are you or a cleaning person if you are lucky enough to have one going to clean the centre of the island? Mine is not as deep as yours and I cannot reach the middle. The island is too large and really dominates the space. I think you may even have space for two islands as it is a generous area? On the plus side its a great size kitchen and I feel you need some glass or something to lighten it up a bit. The black is very dominant. Consider another material for your island worktop as you do not have a hob or a sink inset. You have a lot of worksurface so could get very creative with your choice. I would consider swapping some of the black full height units for white or a wood effect just to soften it a liittle bit. You could have a curved worksurface on the island too. Are your units handleless? If not consider brass or a metal for handles just to lift the overall feel. In this case a lighter splashback would also help to bring light in.

You have just the one corner situation and I would swap the units into that corner. Currently you will have to be on your knees to fully access that corner so storage in there will be very difficult to access. Swap it so you have a 900L shaped unit into the corner which will then allow both doors to open and provide full access.

Hello dwbekker, Another idea is to perhaps hire a designer who can design with all your product specifications in mind and then help you procure them at the most cost effective way possible.. Schemes, colour and everything from a socket to a bulb.. That way you get a complete design with everything considered.. Also a savvy designer with fantastic taste but clever design hacks can also save you on budget.. What's important is having a kitchen that functions around who "you" are in the home in question, how you like to cook and entertain and of course show off every lovely appliance.. .. : ))

Hi Michelle, We've worked on various projects with banquette seating - where the island incorporates a bench seat to which a dining table is added. I would avoid an island, given the space available, but in the past, where we had insufficient room for a fixed island we had a butcher’s block as an alternative and this worked really well. In fact, I loved the butcher’s block so much it moved with us to our current house. It is a bit lower than standard worktop height so is great for all sorts of food prep.

It does all seem a bit spaced out like this. My opinion would be to keep the hob on the island where it is so when you are cooking you are looking out on to what I presume is the garden/outdoor space and you can also see in to the TV/snug area. I would keep the ovens where they are but also position the sink along this wall if possible ( I presume you will be taking the floor up to run the water waste underneath?). I would not try and squeeze the sink/drainer in to the space in the middle of the tall units as this will not give you room to put anything down when taking it out of the oven. I would potentially only have 3 tall units on this wall and maybe keep them all on one side so the space does not look too overcrowded? So you could have a tall housing for a larder, the other for a fridge/freezer and the other for the ovens? For the units on the opposite wall under the window I would keep these all as base height units (no tall units) to help to open the space up more especially as this will be a high traffic zone with people walking through to the dining table and through the doors to the outside space.

That is one massive kitchen! How many people in your household? (Its size is not very balanced with the dining table) And where do the doors lead to? (One hallway, one..?)

Thank you all for taking time to respond. It’s nowhere close to final design or even completely accurate sizes. The size of the island is definitely up for debate.

The flashback will likely be white against navy blue kitchen units with brass handles and there will be 2 x velux windows to allow for more light.

There are two adults, one teen and one child in the household and dining table will be 8 seater. At some point in the future may end up with one or both of my parents with us as they age.
