North-west facing rear garden - should we buy the property?
Comments (16)Our garden is North West facing, the house terraced and the garden average in size approx 70ft in length and 24ft wide to give you a reference. This makes our front room incredibly bright and sunny all morning which is fantastic. It does however mean that if you want to have an early breakfast in the garden, you have to go further down your garden away from the house. By late morning to midday the sun comes round and the garden is full of sunlight right up until it goes down (trees, obstacles allowing). However, our front door is directly next to our right hand neighbours when facing into the house. Downstairs at the back of their house is almost always completely in shade with the dining room and kitchen never getting any sunlight at all. Our gardens have what would have been coal sheds joined by the party wall extending out from the house. This totally blocks the sunlight into the back of their house and the patio just ouside. From that point on they have sunlight all day. Look at any walls trees, garages or out houses that might cause this issue on the left hand side of the house as you face your front door or out into the back garden. Hope this makes sense and helps in some way?...See MoreGarden layout ideas for bottom of garden/advice on waterlogged area
Comments (14)Hi Suzy, It is a very good idea to have a final plan for the garden and do it bit by bit as budget allows. Sometimes people try to do it all at once and it can lead to compromises in the quality of materials to make the budget go further. I think that raised beds will be a very good addition to your garden. I always say that amending a heavy clay soil should be the last option as it is time and money consuming and you need to repeat the procedure overtime. I think that either putting the planting in raised beds (which, if well thought of can be great additions to the garden, creating vertical interest, maybe acting as sections division and seating) or selecting the planting so that only plants that can tolerate this condition (roses are a good example) are used are much better options. Trellises in your case could not only work as sections divisions, but could also screen out the two sheds that you wish to have in your final garden, so probably a good idea. Layout-wise, in my opinion your curved borders do give your garden a nice shape, and creating paths that follow it somewhat would be a good idea. Comments (15)take down the palatial columns and the roof structure and start again. don't worry about the neighbours, once they see improvement they will all follow suit. I think that a pitched porch that doesn't squeeze the windows to either side of the door will work. the whole aesthetic needs to change. italy it isn't and the style and age really isn't best suited to an ionic column . The doornoptions have been suggested but I think you need some encouragement to go through whole hog!! you won't regret it!!...See MoreHow to stop heat in South facing room with bifolds
Comments (21)Aren't they inset into the glass though? It's too late for us 😔 We are getting an air con unit though. It's about £1200 and although it won't be used a huge amount (it's a heater as well) it will be half the price of getting proper blinds in and will be instant cooling as I think the room will still feel warm even with blinds. (we have two roof lights as well!) For living purposes it's never an issue - we just open the door but much harder to deal with with guests in....See MoreBetty Boo
