Stairs in living room - Close off with door

Hi all,
We would like to close off the stairs which are in the living room with a door at the bottom of the stairs.
I'm aware there are rules around distance to the door from the bottom of the stairs in the form of a landing, but hoping there is enough room for this.
Maybe the door could open outwards (avoiding the porch door) and thinking the stud wall with the door in could be at an angle, red line on the floor plan.
Does anyone have any other ideas of the best way to add a door to the bottom of the stairs?

I'm sure you have good reason to want to do this but I don't think you have enough space for the two doors so close to each other. You would have to adjust the porch door. Either hand it or change it to a sliding door.

Hello r1haz, I thought you might be removing the walls there.. Definitely don't block off the staircase... It is stylish and still practical... Just depends how you look at the idea of practical... It's actually more practical to do less and achieve more.!.. In the sense that I think you actually prefer the open plan idea...... It's less work as you're not adding to the work load with removal of downstairs walls....... Possibly increase the extraction element to the kitchen area and make sure the doors have good seals in the bedrooms... Nice looking stair treads can also work with the painted style which will really lend to the less solid feel. Open is preferable to dark and narrow, but you must do what you feel is the right thing... .... .. : ) )

If you've re-plastered and removed the shelf from above, etc., I'd just put a plant on it, like a Philodendron. Something that can live in a dark(ish) corner. If you put a table/floor uplighter behind it that will shine up the walls and light up that corner in the evenings, I think it could be a lovely effect (this one is from (loads available, for example on Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/Astro-4532-Limina-Uplighter-Plaster/dp/B005LVJPH2 )

I think I’d put the tv under the stairs with a small sofa opposite, you should be able to add a small accent chair opposite the sofa. Round dining table by the patio door and I’d get comfy chairs for extra seating for guests. Use a rug, art, lights etc for zoning the areas. I’ve found this pic with the same layout to what you’ve suggested for removing the kitchen wall. I’d probably block off the kitchen door so you can include tall units on that right hand wall (similar to 2nd pic albeit this is bigger). You may be able to extend the peninsula slightly under the stairs. In any case I think I’d contact a concept planner on here such as OnePlan for your kitchen design! I’d also mark out any furniture with boxes or masking tape before ordering anything, good luck with the move!

Thanks all for your comments. I should have said reason for wanting to close off stairs is primarily due to noise travelling upstairs when others are asleep.

I wasn't wanting to go down the route of closing off the inner door as per your plans as quite like how open it is but appreciated the second door might be in the way if I went with my idea. Your ideas are better than what used to be there many years ago it seems, that looked to have taken a chunk out of the corner of the living room!
