They are both hoop pine the difference being approximately 100 years in age. I will add a "before" photo shortly to give people a sense of the radical change. Thanks for your question.

There are arguments either way. Flooring should always be fitted beneath floor standing appliances (whether freestanding or integrated) for ease of installation and removal (and in the case of freestanding appliances, to ensure there are no areas that are visible without any flooring). By having the floor fitted first ensures a level surface, and as mentioned above items such as end panels will be fitted directly on the floor. The kitchen fitter is obviously taking responsibility for not scratching the new floor during installation, and particularly when moving appliances such as the fridge and range cooker. When fitting timber flooring, it is necessary to leave an expansion gap around the perimeter. By plonking heavy kitchen furniture on top largely prevents the natural expansion/shrinkage of the timber, and therefore there is a risk that the flooring may bow or pull apart. One solution is for the kitchen fitter to cut out around the plinth legs, but this does mean if you ever change the layout, but wish to keep the flooring, you will left with a floor resembling Edam cheese!

Hi Ree :) I would take off all the existing skirtings (yes everyone does it differently?!) It will be more work/money as you will undoubtedly cause damage to the plaster when removing them, which will need to be made good then redecorated. You will then be able to see where any cabling and pipes are. Almost certainly some of the skirting will be damaged during removal but this is easily replaced with 'off the shelf' product or you could take a piece to your local timber yard and they can make you some to match. I've done it this way in all rooms in my house and this is how we do it for our clients. All the best Jason :)

Thank you all for your comments. Very much appreciated. My wife is ruling out wood because she doesn't like the look of wood in kitchens and because we have solid wood flooring in the rest of the downstairs area and she thinks it will clash. Picture below of where out kitchen meets the hallway. Also we bought some more of those tiles yesterday to get more of a feel of what it'll look like. It does look pretty good but it does worry us about what type of table and appliance colours we will be able to get and really making it all look a bit drab perhaps? We are leaning towards sticking with relaying the same times the house already has as we have been unable to find any better looking light grey tiles. We do really like them.

You could get reclaimed parquet installed in the kitchen, and then sanded to match the hallway. But there two very different style in the hallway and kitchen, one being 1930's and the other much more modern. So an engineered parquet would work well in the kitchen, the difference in the original parquet in the hall and new parquet in the kitchen would just be a reflection on the different spaces in the house. A smoked oak, with a clear oil would give you a really warm colour and texture to the kitchen floor, as well as not being as cold to touch as slate. Good luck with this, it looks like a lovely house!
