Flat in South Kensington
We were appointed to convert a newly purchased flat in South Kensington into a Pied da Terre in London for a family living abroad. The 80 square metre flat was laid out as a spacious one bedroom flat, with a large reception room, kitchen, fully fitted bathroom and laundry cupboard. Although it was presented in good condition, our clients asked us to redistribute the space into a two-bedroom flat. We were also commissioned to undertake the complete interior design of the project.
The new layout carefully reduced the large living area while maintaining its original features, such as the intricate cornices, shuttered sash windows and original fireplace. The kitchen cupboard was concealed behind mirrored folding sliding doors to maintain the original appearance. All the doors were raised to improve their proportions in relation to the high ceilings, and the narrow corridor was fitted with a false ceiling with indirect lighting to visually increase the width. The former kitchen was converted into the second bedroom, incorporating a small guest toilet that is also a wet room, in keeping with current space-saving trends.
The décor was approached as a retro look, with original European designer pieces from the 1950s and modern furniture to achieve an eclectic look. By giving character to the décor with a vintage feel, we hope to offer a more enduring look to the London home.
