The client had purchased a very modest ‘C’ Listed mid-terrace bungalow located on Main Street within the picturesque village of Port Charlotte on the island of Islay, with enviable panoramic views of the sea.
The original building had an extremely compact and sub-standard layout which in no way met current building regulations or space standards and nor did it meet the needs of the client’s large family.
The client’s brief and aspiration for the property was to substantially enlarge the existing 47m2 property to create a comfortable 3-4 bedroom family holiday home with generous open plan family/living space.
Our key design solution was to open up the entire existing property interior to create a single-family space to the front with views containing an entrance, kitchen, dining & living space, which is typical of the layout for Blackhouses which is a traditional type of house common in Ireland, the Hebrides, and the Scottish Highland, and to connect this via a glazed link element with a new build 71m2 split level single-storey block containing 3 bedrooms, a bathroom and an ensuite which steps up and over the rising contours to the rear.
