Welcoming & modern family home
After purchasing this large house these clients were keen for it to realise its full potential by transforming it into a welcoming modern family home and so they enlisted Mia’s help. The internal space was modified in many areas to meet the needs of this busy young professional couple.
In the entrance hall awkward corners were removed to provide a spacious and welcoming area. The stunning Chinese cabinet and dramatic armoire are a nod to the couple’s close connections to Asia. The bespoke design of the fish wallpaper anchors the whole scheme magnificently.
The entrances to all the ground floor rooms were re-configured to make space for double doors with glass panels so that light flows abundantly from one room to another. The living room continues that Asian feel with a striking black and cream coffee table with very clever hidden panels that can be lifted and a red base that ties in with the richly textured red sofa. The elegant dark wood of the table is picked up again with the wall cabinets, which also have red backdrops. The armchair provides a dramatic statement, with its ornate black detailing and rich red intricate fabric. The curtain fabric has a subtle detail and when drawn makes the space even more intimate and elegant. The wall between the two reception rooms on the ground floor was opened up further and discreet sliding doors that ‘disappear’ were added. When the doors are open the two rooms provide a stunning entertaining space that flow seamlessly into each other. The second reception room has a more relaxed feel with an oversized soft-touch ottoman providing a focal point to the room. The soft neutral tones of the walls, rug and beautiful sofa, are again complemented with splashes of red whilst the modern armchair and footstool make for a quiet seating area near the TV cabinet.
We then move on through to the kitchen via an ingenious sliding door with visible tracks in keeping with the industrial theme that the clients were keen to introduce. The kitchen is much more relaxed and rustic with beautifully coloured French-style velvet dining chairs and pretty and effective antique pendant lights that give a soft, warm glow to the heavy dark-wood dining table. A dark wood French chest of drawers with a natural wooden top ties in with the relaxed feel to the dining area.
The ground floor would not be complete without the study. Here ‘industrial’ is still very much the feel with dark metal mobile shelving. The main wall definitely provides the focal point of the room - the image was sourced by the client and then made into wallpaper. To the far end of the room is the chaise longue that adds a touch of relaxing comfort, complete with reading light.
Moving upstairs we come to the ‘boudoir’ where Mia and her team have translated the client’s desire for an opulent, ‘Alison-in-Wonderland’esque’ dressing room, into a richly decorated haven. A shimmering carpet looks up at the ceiling that has been painted with clouds; intricate wallpaper on every wall, lavish curtains and delicate lighting, not forgetting the gold-leaf fire surround. The two bespoke mirrored cupboards painted in the turquoise of the wallpaper anchor the scheme.
The Master Bedroom is elegantly wallpapered in a grey textured silk, which sets off the dark purple velvet headboard. Again walls were moved and the room entirely re-configured so that the en-suite bathroom is hidden off a corridor opposite the bed, this area has again been fitted with floor to ceiling bespoke storage. The en-suite is flooded with natural light and the glass shower surround means that the space flows effortlessly. The clean lines of the wooden sink and toilet cabinets contrast beautifully with the natural palette of the rest of the room.
The second bathroom is much more feminine and traditional in feel with a beautiful freestanding bath painted in purple that is picked up again with the ornate purple shelf. The subtle motif of the floor tiles adds depth to this very pretty bathroom. The shower also follows this French-chic theme with the white wall tiles and chrome showerhead.
The final area is the loft conversion, a lovely big airy space complete with an en-suite shower room. This is definitely a big-boy’s ‘play’ space with a wall mounted TV and a clever coffee table with integrated bottle and glass storage. The purple hues are back in force with the doors for the under-eave storage and the rug beneath the table to lock it all together.
