XTC Design IncorporatedAn adult retreat and relaxing spa get-away, this space and its amenities are more than comfortable for two. A raised platform between the tub and shower, complete with a seat extending from the tub deck allows for a step down into the shower pan rather than a curb. Vanity cabinetry with flip-up grooming area and lavatory were placed opposite this area to capture the natural lighting and reflections of the view to the backyard. The materials and finishes were kept simple and minimal; sand coloured striated porcelain tile was used for the floor, walls, tub deck and shower ceiling. Matte sheen dark rift oak cabinetry and honed dark brown limestone contrast nicely with the white fixtures and polished chrome fittings. Serene blue walls complete the watery spa-like theme of a much deserved get-away without leaving home.

Partners 4, DesignThe Master Bathroom in this house, built in 1967 by an architect for his own family, had adequate space and an existing skylight, but was rooted in the 1960s with it’s dark marbled laminate tops and dated cabinetry and tile. The clients and I worked closely together to update the space for their 21st century lifestyle, which meant updating the divided layout and removing an unnecessary bidet.

However, if you’ve dreamt of a roll-top bath or a walk-in shower with heating at, then you might want to take longer looking for each item individually. Choosing all white elements will obviously tie everything together, but also think about the style you’re going for – ultra modern taps will clash with traditional Victorian-style wash basins. You want to consider the storage they offer while also making sure they make an attractive feature as you enter your bathroom. Don’t forget you need them to be durable and withstand the damp conditions, e.g. if you’re going for a painted cabinet make sure the paint is suitable for baths. When it comes to flooring, tiles will be durable, easy to clean and deal well with water, but if you want something different you could go with modern concrete, traditional or country-style treated wooden floorboards, or a bit more quirky bamboo, cork or vinyl. Recessed shelves can make a huge difference both visually and practically to small bathrooms, so if you are able to have these installed when your walls are being renovated you could add some to your shower or sink area. You could choose pale colours and iridescent tiles that reflect the light, keep walls and ceilings the same colour and texture, and use complementary shades throughout the bathroom– fewer contrasts and transitions will help maintain the sense of space.
