Product: Authentic Limestone for Exterior Living Spaces. Ancient Surfaces Contacts: (212) 461-0245 Email: Sales@ancientsurfaces.com Website: www.AncientSurfaces.com The design of external living spaces is known as the 'Al Fresco' design style as it is called in Italian. 'Al Fresco' translates into 'the open' or 'the cool/fresh exterior'. Customizing a fully functional outdoor kitchen, pizza oven, BBQ, fireplace or Jacuzzi pool spa all out of old reclaimed Mediterranean stone pieces is no easy task and shouldn’t be created out of the lowest common denominator of building materials such as concrete, Indian slates or Turkish travertine. The one thing you can bet the farmhouse on is that when the entire process unravels and when your outdoor living space materializes from the architects rendering to real life, you will be guaranteed a true Mediterranean living experience if your choice of construction material was as authentic and possible to the Southern Mediterranean regions. We believe that the coziness of your surroundings brought about by the creative usage of our antique stone elements will only amplify that authenticity. whether you are enjoying a relaxing time soaking the sun inside one of our Jacuzzi spa stone fountains or sharing unforgettable memories with family and friends while baking your own pizzas in one of our outdoor BBQ pizza ovens, our stone designs will always evoke in most a feeling of euphoria and exultation that one only gets while being on vacation is some exotic European island surrounded with the pristine beauty of indigenous nature and ancient architecture...

Mixing sleek hard landscaping with drifts of soft planting, the garden provided a contemporary yet relaxing city haven for a professional couple to unwind in. The garden took its inspiration from the Silent Pool Distillery, located in the beautiful, rural landscape of the Surrey Hills. A raised, infinity-edged water feature reflected the spring-fed Silent Pool, a source of water for the gin. The quality UK-sourced materials used in the garden included textural Portland stone, Purbeck walling and weathered oak. The intricate gin-making process was represented through the laser-cut copper panels, polished copper distillation helmets and a central ‘citrus peel’ sculpture. Native, multi-stemmed trees created a canopy that provided a layer of privacy from neighouring properties. The planting, in tones of predominantly blues, whites, greens and hints of copper, subtly blends to create a calming ambience.

Smaller streams alongside the waterfall were incorporated to flow as offshoots to the main falls. Landscaping plantings were strategically placed to cover pumps used in the running of the waterfalls.

A pondless water feature constructed for beauty. Shelves of Moss rock boulder were constructed at precise elevations to create a tranquil sound of flowing water. Water feature was designed for safety - our customer has small children and they did not want any depth of standing water. Lighting accentuates the surrounding landscape, water and boulder to provide a wonderful evening ambiance.

This small residential garden was a complete transformation of an existing landscape. The original front, back and side yards were poorly performing lawns areas. The front garden was built up with large local blast rock to create a level area for the house to sit upon. A second set of steps - large rock slabs - were used to give better access to the front entrance that was crowded by parked cars. Lush plantings were chosen to provide curb appeal and seasonal interest. Front yard plants selected are 'deer proof'. The side and back yard of this landscape were fenced to provide privacy and allow for a wider range of plant material. The back garden design incorporated sections of an existing rock retaining wall into rockery features as well as a raised planting bed and feature pond. Paving in the back patio areas is a coloured stamped concrete. The side yard pavers are Pennsylvania Bluestone slabs. Photos by Josh Leslie

A low impact build garden, generously planted for wildlife focus. Strong circular layout underpins the paths and patio features, creating rhythm and movement. A circular pergola above the patio mirrors the bold shape and casts reflections on the pond surface. The raised wildlife pond has a duel purpose. It retains the upper terrace level on one side and provides a perch seat on the lower terrace wall level. The curved intersections into each patio create a grounded sense of peaceful calm in which to observe the wildlife presant in surrounding trees and pond. The design works with the existing site gradient and reuses all the York stone crazy paving existing on site. Little has gone to landfill during this landscape installation. Woodland planting scheme under the shade of mature trees supports a dense bird habitat.

Small rear garden in St Albans, Hertfordshire. Gabion cages filled with Purbeck stone were used for the retaining walls which create height and interest. The original pond with the Acer growing over the top was retained, raised slightly and re-lined with fibreglass. A circular path creates movement around the garden which is divided in half with the rear half being devoted to growing a vegetables. A powder coated aluminium pergola adds sculptural dimension, height and interest. The raised vegetable beds were created from Oak railway sleepers. Many plants were retained and re-homed.
