My very first apartment - and I don't know what to do with it!
Comments (11)Congratulations on getting such a beautiful first apartment. I'd definitely start with a sofa and 2 chairs, and NOT a loveseat! A lot of us houzzers are anti-loveseat. Two chairs offer so much more flexibility than a loveseat. I'd place the sofa on the wall opposite the fireplace. The two chairs would go in the window with a small table between them. You said you wanted a "big old sofa". I hope that was just a figure of speech as what I think you'd be far better off with is a sofa that is of a nice size, but not too big. I'd look for one with skinny arms so that you have more seating space which is what a sofa is for, after all! A sofa that is 84" long will fit in most homes nicely. Watch the depth of the sofa too as lots of them have gotten far too deep. I'd go 39" deep max. Remember that this is your first apartment, but not your last so stick with pieces that aren't too big. Pay attention to the size of the chairs also. I'd stay under 35" wide, and again with narrow arms. My recommendation would be solid fabrics for both the sofa and the chairs. You can have fun with pattern when you get around to a rug and pillows. You'll also need a coffee table, plus a table to go between the two chairs. I adore the faceted mirror table from West Elm below and would make it a must have. The coffee table below with the marble top is lovely as long as you don't spill red wine on it! Comments (2)Thanks for your response mayfly182. In response to your questions, I opened the blinds and took pics in the daytime. However unfortunately because my building is in between 2 high rise buildings, we don't get a lot of light in. The windows in the house might have a slight tint also to prevent the neighbors from looking in, If need be, I can have that replaced to create more light. We do tend to keep the blinds closed for the most part. But that's also because It doesn't seem to make a difference much when we open them. What do I hate about it? Well I feel we failed at what we wanted to achieve. I wanted something contemporary with a nice mix of bold colors accomplished either with the wall paint or by proper accessorizing. We unfortunately started off on the wrong foot. We painted the house first without having a proper direction, and it was downhill from there. It doesn't have the wow factor you feel when you walk into a well designed room with properly matched colors. Im not crazy about the wall colors or the color of the furniture. I am open to changing the fabric colors or replacing them if need be (last resort). What do I want to keep? Im open to anything. I love my reclining chair + projector/screen. Would like to keep that. When we moved in, the floor had green tiles. But because of the kids, we went with a black carpet. We have no center rugs. I am open to replacing the carpet to a different color. The blinds were recently installed about 4 months ago. We had curtains before but took them off because they attracted too much dust. I have added you to my ideabook that has a bunch of pictures of the living + dining room. I am excited to hear what your ideas are. Looking forward to your response....See MoreVery small , awkward living room - I don't know where to place things!
Comments (11)Curtains look neutral as does the carpet. Personally I would keep these to start with and paint the walls a mid grey which might sound bold when originally you wanted white but it will be broken up a lot by the windows and kitchen. If it is possible to get rid of the peninsular the kitchen will feel less imposing. Since the kitchen is open to the living room I would be trying to find a cupboard elsewhere to house this although you can get washers with a timer which you can set when you go to bed and they finish as you get up in the morning. Rectangular dining tables work when you have a straight wall perhaps a circular table would be better here. I would use masking tape on the floor to help visualise furniture placement. Try putting a sofa in the middle of the room, with the side to the front door and it facing the opposite corner to the kitchen....See MoreI don't know how to accessorise my house :(
Comments (20)Thank you to everyone for your suggestions, from not knowing where to start I've got lots of good ideas ... and would still welcome more. Just so you know the canvas above the glass table in the hallway is actually wired with LED to light up - it's an Arabic scripture reading "God bless this house and those who enter" which was an important feature for us to have ... so I'm afraid it's staying lol! I love the idea of black and white prints going up the staircase ... but it's all starting to look a bit too grey toned in the hallway and would like to inject some colour but at the same time it needs to complement the flash of turquoise in our canvas without clashing .... herein lies the problem for me whereas someone else I'm sure can effortless throw complimenting and colourful accessories in! I tried putting a plant on the glass table and it looked a bit odd to me ... maybe an orchid in a colour that will go with the turquoise ... which will then also have to complement the artwork on the stairs ....!! Dilemmas!!! lol...See MoreAkiva Projects Ltd
