Need help choosing a curtain/blind fabric!

I've chosen some beautiful butterfly wallpaper (Flutterby Pearl, by Julian McDonald), but am struggling to choose fabric for curtains / blinds, and deciding on a finish that will block out the most light. Your thoughts would be great!

The room is quite small (L 274cm; W 183cm; H 227cm), with a window at the narrow end opposite the door way that is H123cm and W176cm. The 7cm difference is all on the left, as the window frame goes right up to the wall on the right.

The wallpaper will be on the Left wall, the wall below & around the window, and on the wall with the door. The fourth wall will be painted an off-white that matches the background to the wall paper. (The idea is that it will be easier to add book shelves and pictures etc, without ruining the wall paper whenever we want to move them).

I've attached some photos of the wallpaper (see the sparkly background!), and the window on the left and right hand side. We're in the middle of sizing the walls post-plastering, and the wardrobe is in the middle of the room, covered by a sheet, so I can't get a full photo of the room.

I'm quite handy with a sewing machine, so happy to make the curtains / blinds, but just struggling to choose the fabric and decide on the final style (roman blinds / pull blind / recessed / curtains with valance etc)

It is going to be a nursery (I've 8 weeks until baby arrives), but she'll be in our room for the first few months, so we have a bit of time....

Good news is that I've chosen some curtains - a neutral pleated set, with a black out lining, from John Lewis that go with the wallpaper background without being sparkly...! On the off-chance that someone has experience with fitting curtains on awkward walls, can anyone recommend what sort of curtain rail / tracking to use for this window? I.e. a couple of inches of wall space to the left, and zero to the right of the window... Thanks!

You need to search for 'recess curtain poles', they have smaller end caps.

Lovely choices! It would be helpful to see the room that they will be going into so that we can see how they'll fit and what other furniture they'll be with. They way they are it comes ac Initially, my thought would be to get different pillows for the sofa that would coordinate with the chair to bring a bit more visual activity into the room and toss in your personality. Keep the pillows and try a pillow cover, cover them yourself or simply add pillows that are more you. i.e. a hot spot of color, a print from nature, etc. Or, just leave it without pillows and add a throw. Do you have a rug or carpet that you're currently working with? What direction do the windows look out? Do you have existing pieces of lighting, tables, chairs, etc that you'll be keeping that need to blend with the new?

Oh, okay. Basically you have a blank canvas, loads of colours will work. But I'd be tempted to go with black & white. Maybe Lohko by Scion? You'll have to get samples and look at fabrics in your kitchen though. http://www.janeclayton.co.uk/product/lohko/105991

Hi Lucy, Have you considered roller blinds on the french doors like the photo below? We installed these sunscreen roller blinds on the actual doors as they open inwards too. When fitting blinds to french doors, you need to make sure that the blinds clear the door handle and the hinges. Here is another example of sunscreen roller blinds we installed to the actual french doors. I tend to prefer long curtains personally as well but if you think that brushing past them would annoy you then I’d go for short. Roman blinds could be an option as well if they will tuck under the pelmet, I do feel that you’d need a double layer approach with perhaps a roller blind in the window to block out the light tho. You could always ask the curtain maker to include curtain weights in the bottom. This would help to make the fabric hang a lot straighter. Of course this does depend on what type of fabric you choose. A thick woven wool or chenille for example (something you might use for cushions or upholstery) will have a lot more bulk and stick out more. Synthetic materials such as nylon and polyester tend to drape better because of the smooth weave.
