Comments (20)This discussion neglects the beam angle of the bulb in the fixture. These can vary from about 15 degrees to around 50 degrees. Additionally, tilting a Gimbel fixture does not necessarily cut off light as the beam is a three-dimensional paraboloid for which the math is much more complex than this simplistic tangent formula. The guidelines here will put you in the ballpark however. Unfortunately many "lighting experts" don't really know lighting. RPI (Rennselaer Polytechnic) has a lighting division with good information on line for those interested. I attended their one-day course prior to designing our own lighting for a kitchen renovation. It was a more expensive option but was so much better value for money in the long-term as it gave us masses of space. A small set of aluminium steps hangs inside one cupboard. Comments (3)You need to consider 2 important points. 1. Raw material sizing will restrict how high you can make your units. You also need to consider transport. Its one thing to make a 3m high tall unit (not possible as most material sheets max out at around 2.4-2.5m) but how do you transport it. How do you bring it round corners in houses etc? 2. Special sizing and slab painted doors are not what you would find in sheds. Comments (33)Hi Aisling There is a lot of good advice here and the only thing I would add is that when I re-did my kitchen I asked myself a couple of basic questions; the first being did I intend to stay in the house - in my case the answer was yes, the second question was how often was I going to 'do' the kitchen. Given the expense, enviromental considerations etc I estimated I wanted my kitchen to last 15/20 years. With this in mind I had to decide if a two tone kitchen would date and simply look mis-matched in 5 years time as trends moved on. For me the choice was simply I decided on one colour, in a classic design and added 'modern'' touches/colour via lighting, handles, tap, applicances i.e. kettle, toaster which are less expensive to change if you want to ring in the changes. Ps. a great place to purchase handles of all sorts is More Handles Limited, they have two showroom where you can browse, an online website and brilliant customer service. 8 years agoour ceilings are 9', we had a small chase we couldnt get rid of. so we did 39" cabinets with a door style reminiscent of stacked cabinets without the extra expense.

8 years agoWe think your interior designer is giving you some really good advice! As the "after" picture from a recent remodel shows, leaving room at the top of the cabinet to run the ceiling moulding around really enhances the overall appearance. Also, be sure to pair your upper cabinets so that they don't close into a stile - cabinet stiles really inhibit storage use. And while we're at it, make the upper cabinets 14" deep so all (not most!) plates will fit! Good luck, and have fun!

8 years agoHi! I've had a design firm for 30 years and have done a lot of kitchens. I think you ABSOLUTELY should run the cabinetry to the ceiling. It is just a matter of whether you want to put the extra dollars in to having a separate, back lit cabinet at the top. It is likely to cost more and then you have to find a "set" of something to put in each cabinet. I show all my clients their kitchens in 3d. I wonder if your designer could do this???? Then you could get a much better idea of what it would feel like to be in your kitchen with tall cabinets. Here is just an example of what I did for a recent client:

8 years agoI think that tall cabinets make the kitchen look really classy, and they provide really useful storage. A row of glass-fronted cabinets is cute, but basically decorative (and light) only. I think you can get to a 9-foot ceiling with 42" cabinets, which is hardly towering. What makes your rendering look heavy is that it's a huge expanse of unchanging doors -- if you stick in a couple of (frosted) glass cabinets down there, or break it up some other way (open shelves, or a wine rack, say) it won't look so dull. Honestly, I don't understand all the worries about doors. 42" is not a towering effect!
They feel high, but just to the degree that you need a footstool to reach the less frequently used stuff on the top shelf. Not looming tower high!

8 years agoduh, i just measured mine....they are 42" not 39 as i said earlier.
i think the glass fronts look pretty and the lights are nice but they are expensive and they are totally unusable space unless you already have a collection of x. the idea of buying glass front boxes and then buying something to put in them offends my yankee (puritan?) sensibilites, LOL.Shannon Smith
