Basement conversion

Hello, we are currently intending to transform our basement into a living space with bedroom, bathroom, open plan lounge & dining area with a games room. We are quite anxious that creating a bathroom will create damp if not properly ventilated and will we come across problems with the toilet & water waste being pumped up and across through pipe work across a ceiling?

Wow - are you planning to fit all of those rooms into the basement space alone? I'd love to see some photos, if you have any!

Hello Ocean Clarke,
We are making are changing our minds I think, about putting a bathroom in the basement . We are aiming for a more open plan aspect. We gave ground floor plans also, I will post them up soon .
Sorry we don't have any photos just yet. We only have the first set of drawn up plans but even as we speak these probably will change, we are trying to achieve a more logical flow to work / living space.

No worries, I just went to b and q, bought the large sheets of MDF and got them to cut it in store to 12 inches and 10inches, used filler to hide the joins as it only comes in 2400mm lengths. I'm sure your contractor could do something similar, or if you wanted wood he could use that but I just went with MDF because it was going to be painted white anyway. Google skirting boards for ideas but I would go high so it ties in with your original windows, good luck.

You can realistically only use this as a proper room if you have it tanked. I think the advice and quote you have had from the basement specialist is the same advice you will get from any builder looking at it.

Downstairs WC- I would extend the hallway a little into the kitchen area and put the wc where the kitchen sink is now. This would still leave a room that is 15’ long and big enough to plan as a kitchen diner even without a side return extension. The front reception rooms will never be bigger but if they are dark there are likely decorating and lighting solutions- posting some pictures will stimulate some thoughts from the community.

Hello, we have recently bought a 200 year old house. The previous owners have done a pretty good job at starting to renovate the basement. It has concrete floors, lighting, electricity etc. On the ceiling there are MDF boards but with pipes showing. The walls are stone and concrete at the moment. Does anyone know what the next stage of renovation would be? Would it be just to hire a plasterer or would we need to do something else first? And what about the pipes? Sounds so interesting - definitely do feel free to send some progress pictures along the way. Basement extensions fascinate me! Have you got any ideas about how to increase natural light flow?

Fear not waters edge. I have done this where we had to pump up to a drain. Its quite a bit of digging and you will need an outside space and access. Have a look at Tanks Direct. Ventilation could be an issue but its no different to an indoor swimming pool. You could look into an air to air heat exchange system for the whole area. It is relatively inexpensive and can be run on solar power.
