Extractor fan on side extension

We want to have our hob underneath our lean to glass roof on our side extension. The problem is, there is no ceiling for the extractor to go into. It is on an external wall, so heading out the side is an option, but I'm worried that it will look stupid with the extractor just stopping at the top of the wall.

The first image is what our extension looks like (similar). The second is what a typical extractor looks like. You see how the ducting meets the ceiling - we can't do that. So what kind of extractor would work?

Have you considered a downdraft extractor hood? They are a bit more pricey, but could be a neat solution to your problem.

i have the same problem and we have a pitched ceiling so anything looks a bit weird hanging down. i think i am going to go for an extractor that is built in to the hob so it keeps the clean lines and nothing breaks up the sight line across the island. ive looked at a couple and although expensive are a lot less than buying a hob and separate extractor!

Add a charcoal filter to the stainless steel hood to make it recirculating and add a small electric wall fan ( like expelair type ) where you marked the wall - as long as it extracts a min 60lps that should be ok for uk building Regs.

We have a Novy Pure’line built into the ceiling above our island hob in our open plan room and are happy with it. It‘s powerful but also quiet. Also a very discreet design. Westin Stratus was another contender which may be more well known in the UK - Westin are very helpful on the phone if you have queries. If you have a limited ceiling void (eg in an original period building rather than an extension) you may need the Westin Stratus Compact. We do have an electric opening skylight right behind the extractor fan which we use if frying something particularly smelly or smoky - would that be an option?

Hi- I also considered using a ceiling extractor fan over my hob. Like yours my hob is on a wall, not on an island. As long as your space can meet the installation requirements for ducting, distances, electrical connections, etc, I don’t see any reason why you shouldn’t use one.
