Just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who helped with ideas, and especially Jen for giving me a bit of inspiration and a light bulb moment! You are so right, holding your nerves whilst it’s going up is the hardest!! . I did opt for a splash back only and extended it so it goes a little under the cupboards. I’ve posted the finished pic below and hopefully going to accessorise with copper and wood to add warmth! A big hug and thanks to all x

I'd have a matching upstand, most worktops (i'm assuming its a laminate) now have a matching upstand available and this is usually about 100mm tall and 3m long and i'd run this all round the kitchen on the worktop. Where you hob is i'd have a glass splashback (these can be easily made to measure or bought off the shelf) if you have a gas hob you can't run the upstand behind this so the glass splashback will have to sit on the worktop but if its an electric hob then you have the option of running the upstand behind the hob and sitting the glass splashback on the upstand. Looks good IMO, seals the worktop to the wall and is clean and tidy. Alternatively, if you don't like any paint, lots of worktops also have a splashback board available, 600mm wide 3m long and you can use this to go between the worktops and wall units, again if you have a gas hob you would have to cover the laminate splashback with a glass splashback (you can get clear glass).

We didn’t have one put behind our sink but we have a boiling water tap and it splutters all the time and I’m forever cleaning the wall. The paint is supposed to be for kitchens but it can only endure so many washes! We will eventually put one on - perhaps a 12” glass one so the dark paint on the walls will show through. You could consider tiling a couple of rows or get solid colours ie pure white if your sink wall is only ever going to be white.

I personally love tiles. I think they add interest. However I had to google Wow Fez tiles as I had no idea what they were! So they are Moroccan hand made style tiles and you are wanting plain white ones? Is that right? Are they like the ones in my second pic? If so, I think they are beautiful. I think metro/subway tiles are a bit boring unless they are an interesting colour. I would tile behind the cooker and up to the window sills. However some people have just an upstand in the same material as the worktop (picture below) and use a washable paint on the rest of the wall. It boils down to personal taste.
